Description

First, we are NOT a car dealer. Our ebay name spoilsportmotors is from an old comedy album. My wife & I both love cars and we have a car hobby.

Yes, it really does have just 9,792 miles on it. And it looks match the mileage!

I know that most NSXs have lots of miles, mainly because they are so reliable compared to other exotic cars. So the fact that ours has such low mileage requires some explanation. We bought our NSX Jan 9, 1998. It had 4,893 miles on it at the time. That means in the 19 years we have owned it, we've only driven it 4,899 miles. How can this be? Well, this is just one of what we call our "hobby cars". We also have a Porsche Cayman, DeLorean (which we've owned for 30 years), Karmann Ghia and Messerschmitt. My wife & I both love cars. We keep them in our 9-car garage. Of course, we have our every-day drivers as well which get the real mileage. So, our hobby cars are really just for car shows and the occasional drive to lunch or dinner.

They have all been in many shows. We don't always enter the judging, but our NSX once took 1st place for NSXs at the "Festival Of Exotic Cars" in Mt. Dora, FL. In 2015 we took it to the "Auto Geek" show in Stuart, FL where we have photos of both Wayne Carini & Dennis Gage with our car. Both of them said how much they loved it and how the NSX was finally getting the respect it has always deserved, being one of their favorite cars.

I buy cars for how they look. While performance and handling are marks of a great car, I really don't drive it any differently than I would a Civic. It has always been in our garage here in FL, and if the humidity starts to rise we turn on the dehumidifier. We don't smoke, never have and would never eat or drink in any of our hobby cars.

This car is completely original except for the stereo. Where should I begin on the stereo? The NSX is an exotic sports car made by Honda. They taught the world that making a usable reliable exotic is not a contradiction in terms. Early on, there were many articles that said the NSX had Ferrari and the other exotic car makers shaking in their driving shoes. As time went by, though, it forced Ferrari to up it's game and start to make their cars more usable and reliable. The articles began saying that in reality, the NSX may have saved Ferrari by making them do the right thing.

OK, back to the stereo. Here is this hi-tech beautifully engineered sports car. It has proven to be as reliable as a Civic. But the Bose radio/cassette stereo? Garbage. First, it sounds awful. But the real insult is that all the elements crap out one at a time. First one door speaker/amplifier assembly, then the other, then the head unit. Total junk. You can read people's stereo miseries on the forums. The amplifiers are located out in the doors, not in the dash where they would be better protected from heat and moisture. They ran large gauge power cables along with extremely small differential audio signals out to the door speaker assemblies. The speakers themselves were pathetic.

I'm no mechanic, but I am an electronics design engineer. After repairing these things and working around them for years, I finally pulled the whole stereo system. Replacing it wasn't easy, as the dash is formed around the head-end unit. Not wanting to risk ruining it, we contacted Travis at highlinecaraudio.com. There were pictures in the forum at NSXprime.com, showing how they had modified other NSX consoles for people in order to accept a standard stereo. They looked great, so we went for it.

I ordered the double-DIN stereo bracket from Science Of Speed then waited to get our modified console back. Now I was able to install a great Pioneer touch-screen stereo, which has CD/DVD, USB & SD card. We took apart the door speaker/amplifier enclosures, tossed those horrible amps and speakers, and put in nice Kenwood co-axial speakers. No evidence of the speaker change can be seen at all as I put back in the now internally modified original cabinets.

The results speak for themselves. The console looks fantastic! I had agonized on whether to try to have the original bronze-ish color duplicated or go with satin black. I went with the black and am so glad I did. The guys gave it just the right amount of texture therefore the color difference just isn't noticeable. So again, the stereo is the only thing that is not original and I have no regrets!

Work done over the years:

- Had the A/C system changed over to R-134a

- Replaced on both sides the window lift/motor assemblies

- Replaced the little plastic pedal-stops on clutch & brake pedals

- Repaired speedometer circuit board

- Repaired A/C controller circuit board

- Clutch slave cylinder replaced

- Timing belt replaced (for age not mileage)

- A couple times replaced the engine and trunk lid's gas struts

- Engine and transmission oil changes

- The leather on the arm rest had a small scratch, so I replaced the arm rest with new Acura OEM part.

- I put in a little stub of a cable to connect to a Battery Tender charger. This is easily removed if you prefer, but it greatly improves battery life. I'll include the charger if you like.

Condition:

While the car is 26 years old, it is nearly perfect. There are absolutely no dings what-so-ever! The paint is completely original and has a beautiful deep shine. I've always had it professionally detailed. When we wash it between detailings we use distilled water, Meguiar's Deep Crystal Car Wash with microfiber cloths. Bottom line is that you simply won't believe how beautiful this car is.

The shifter is the most precise and satisfying one I have ever felt, even better than my much newer Cayman. It is as smooth today as when I got it. The tires are not the originals but are the correct size and are also Yokohamas (S-Drives). They have approx. 1000 miles on them and look new. The seats are in excellent condition, no tears. The drivers side does have some mild entry-creasing. I had simple floor mats over the original NSX floor mats to protect them. The wheels are in great condition but do have a couple touched-up areas and there are tire service marks especially on one edge.

There are only 2 negative things I can think of. One is that there are a few places on the nose and the front of the hood where I have used a touchup brush on some chips over the years. These are all tiny where I just used a few hairs of the brush. Again, this is original paint and that nose is quite low.

The other is recent. The ABS indicator on the dash came on a little while after starting the car. I researched it on the NSXprime forum and found out that just about all NSXs have this, particularly ones that don't get driven much. It seems some solenoid valves get gummed up. I pulled the relay for the pump so it wouldn't be damaged trying to build pressure. The brakes don't feel any different because ABS only kicks in during hard braking on slippery surfaces. That's actually part of the problem, it only gets used under these circumstances, and I don't think I've ever had occasion for it to kick in. I'm going to let the next owner decide what to do about this.

Included:

- one beautiful NSX

- two original keys, two original blanks plus one original fancy titanium key

- original spare, jack, inflator

- owner's manual

- quality car cover

- nose bra

- sun-shield

- if you like, the Battery Tender charger
