First introduced back in 1966 as the Duetto and brought to fame in the1967movie "The Graduate" starring Dustin Hoffman, Alfa Romeo's Spider is an automotive icon par excellence. Built for almost 30 years with only slight upgrades, it provides pure, unadulterated fun and is the quintessential Italian sports car.
Even in its final years or "Series Three" guise, the Spider still exuded the Italian way of la dolce vita so prevalent during the 1960s. Yes, the Spider gained a reliable BOSCH fuel injection and a few more creature comforts, but at heart it's still the Spider we've all have come to love.
Now after 30 years, many of these purists' cars have been eaten alive by the merciless rust cancer. Others have been "restored" with varying degrees of competence. But they will never be the same, 'cause a car is original only once. Nicely preserved, low mile, original examples, true survivors that have never been restored, never needed restoration, are highly sought after today. They are the ones true collectors lust for.
Such an amazing find is the miraculously well-preserved Alfa presented for auction here!
This wonderful Graduate is as nice and as original as it gets. Family owned since new by two brothers, the car was always garaged and pampered - and has never left the Golden State.
It never suffered from neglect or corrosion and is as virginally preserved as one could hope for.
Manufactured in January of 1986, this Spider Graduate was sold new at Alfa of Santa Monica to Brian, a mature Gentleman living in Camarillo, CA.
The car was rarely driven and in the early 2000’s was stored for over a decade.
After Brian’s passing in 2012, his brother Erich became the new custodian.
A meticulous Gentleman who, in his pursuit of perfection, Erich invested $2,486 having it brought back to life with a full upper engine overhaul.
This wasonly 6,000 miles ago.
And less than 1000 miles ago,the car received a complete service including oil change, fan belt, battery and compression test.
This truly exceptional Spider comes with its complete set of books including the original Owner's Manual and stamped maintenance program book.
Being a pampered toy, this Alfa Romeo was driven less than 1,600 (Hundred!) miles annually, on average and has never been in an accident, big or small (facts that are supported by a clean history report).
Let's inspect this sexy Italian closely now, starting with its exterior.
The immaculate body and trimnot only speak volumes about the loving care this Alfa has always received but underscores its Southern California provenance.
The Pininfarina -designed coachwork is arrow-straight with perfect gaps andits lines are showroom crisp.
Door, hood and trunk fit are excellent, and there are absolutely no signs that this car has ever been involved in an accident, not even a small one. (Click the Vehicle History tab)
100% rust free as well.
The original finish is smooth and glossy, just like Mr. Pininfarina intended when he built the car.
All of the paint still displays a wonderful luster; please, keep in mind, it's 33 years old and there are some small imperfections, namely few chips in isolated places.
The triple black color combination is highly desirable for an Italian sports car, the Alfa looks fabulous.
With only a few touched-up areas in front, this Alfa is still sporting all of its original, factory-applied nero di getto (jet-black) paint.
Fortunately, a brand-new, upgraded Robbinstop was just installed.
With Stayfast canvas and crystal-clear rear window, it fits tight as a drum with no leaks or wind noises and is super easy to operate with one hand.
The black top cover also fits easily and protects everything when the top is folded down
Graduate’s simple, beautifully preserved, factory steel wheels with chromed lug nuts, polished trim rings and excellent radial tires of the correct size 185/70R14.
While we’re down on one knee, let’s have a look underneath.
Manufactured before modern rust proofing methods were adopted by Alfa Romeo, it's truly a miracle that the car has survived the past 33 years without the brown rust cancer taking hold.
Spider's underbelly looks 100% correct and undisturbed; even some of the factory-applied Cosmolene wax coating is still intact.
It doesn't get any nicer than this!
Let's now focus our attention on Alfa's exciting cockpit!
From the simple bucket seats to the pristine door panels, center console and dash, this minimalist Graduate interior is spotless and in a wonderfully preserved state.
The vinyl bucket seats are still very supple.
Flawless center console houses electric controls for the mirrors, cigar lighter, etc.
Fully carpeted area behind the seats holds additional luggage.
Carpeted floor mats are included.
Convertible top frame is excellent, sun visors and mirror pristine.
Zero wear on the padded steering wheel. Grain is 100%.
Beautiful Jaeger instruments are centrally located, right in front of the pilot.
And the 52,361 miles displayed on the 6-digit odometer are original!
All lights, heater, gauges, and switches work flawlessly.
Other than the stereo, nothing has been modified; shift knob is the original.
The period Kenwood “pullout” AM/FM Cassette (how modern!) with 2 rear STEREO speakers guarantees pleasurable audio, even when traveling topless at speeds well above the double nickel.
1door/trunk key and2 originalignition keys and are included.
Condition of this 100% original interior is testimony to the car's low, low miles and garaged life.
How about a peek inside the rear boot?
Immaculately carpeted trunk isroomy.
Rust free trunk floor, original spare, unused tire jack and lug wrench are included.
A picture says a thousand words; this all original trunk is clean!
Okay, let’s have a close look under the hood.
Engine& Mechanical:
Raising the hood reveals the silky smooth, 4-cylinder power plant.
Engine compartment is spotlessly clean.
Note the beautifully preserved underhood labels.
This Alfa comes with its original 2-liter dual overhead cam power plant mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.
Add a BOSCH electronic fuel injection system and there’s more than enough HP to propel the car past any legal freeway speeds.
The engine starts easily every time, idles smoothly, and runs strong with no unusual noises or smoke.
With less than 10,000 miles on the upper-half rebuild and a recent service for the oil, battery, fan belt replacement and compression test, it’s no surprise the engine shows outstanding compression anddisplays zero bad habits.
Car has always passed the stringent biennial California smog inspection with flying colors.
With appearance and drivability of a car that’s always been pampered and meticulously maintained, this Alfais mechanically as strong as it is cosmetically.
Speaking of cosmetics, look how straight the body is, how sparkling the chrome, how glossy the paint: if you wouldn't know differently, you'd think to be looking at a 3-year old, not a 33-year old car…
This one is that clean!
Driving Experience:
Twisting the key brings the Spider's all-aluminum twin-camtwo-litre inline four into life.
Alfa features a happy synthesis of 1960s design and 1990s technology.
Thanks to fuel injection, it starts instantly and has plenty of power.
Easy to maneuver, the 5-speed manual transmission shifts great, 4-wheel disc brakes stop the car on the proverbial dime, and the suspension delivers a fine balance between sport and comfort.
This black rocket is in its element on fast highways.
In 5th gear on the freeway, it hums along happily while being the proverbial gas miser at 24 MPG.
This 1960s icon will rekindle your love for the wind-in-the-hair feeling and being a highly pampered, CA car certainly has its advantages. Originality and low miles help, too. Mileage currently stands at 52,410!
Everything works on this Alfa, from lights and switches to heater fan and back-up lights. Despite its age, the car definitely is ready to be driven anywhere, even across the Country, if that's where you live.
For enthusiasts, this fine example ticks all the right boxes and will appreciate in value as surely as there will be gondolas in Venice twenty years from now.
Purchasing the best-preserved specimen you can find is sage advice dispensed by nearly every classic car guru. This Alfa Romeo proves it amply: is there another classic that provides more carefree fun for less money? We don’t think so . . .
33-year-old, original-paint survivors of any make are hard to find, let alone those that allow for open top motoring. This Alfa with its exciting original color combination, strong drive-train, arrow-straight body, and rust-free undercarriage is the among finest un-restored cars of its kind. It miraculously managed to stay out of harm's way all these years and definitely qualifies as a keeper to somebody who realizes that a car is original only once, something that no amount of money could bring back.
Presently, we have a clear, California Title.
A CA smog Certificatewill be provided to complete Title transfer here in CA. Only local sales tax and a $15 DMV transfer fee applies to residents in CA.
These Blue & Gold California license plates were originally assigned to the Alfa when new.
They are included in the sale along with the Santa Monica Alfa Romeo license plate frame from the original selling dealership!
These newer CA plates were issued in 2012 and are currently assigned to the car with license & registration fees paid through December 2019.
