Description

1970 AMC AMXUp for auction is quite a rare and desirablecar, a restored 1970 AMC AMX with a 390 cubic inch engine and automatic transmission. In 1970 only 4116 AMXs were produced, and only 901came withthe 390and anAT.
Any AMX is rare and desirable, but the 1970 models are considering the pinnacle of development with their upgraded and redesigned front suspension, front grille andhigher horsepower 390engine, the most powerful engine from AMC up to that date with 325 bhp. This example is fully loaded with the factory Go-Package, Ram Air, factory A/C, power steering, power brakes with discs up front, tilt column, tinted windshield, remote driver’s side mirror, AM radio, clock, twin grip rear end and more. Less than 10 years ago this AMX had a full bare metal and engine-out respray in her original factory Golden Lime Metallic color. Being a CA car that has been collector owned, she is rust-free and wears her original metal. Her paint shines and panels are straight. Chrome and stainless trim remain in great condition, as do side and taillight lenses. When she was repainted her powerful 390 engine was already running well, but we had the engine pulled regardless and it was rebuilt. Since the rebuild the engine only has about 2,500 miles on it and needless to say it runs perfectly, showing no smoke at anytime, whether on cold start up or heavy acceleration. At the same time the heavy dutyshift-commandautomatic transmission that was also working just fine was freshened with new seals, filters and fluid. For enhanced performance we added an aluminum intake manifold, Edelbrock 650 cfm carburetor and MSD ignition. This work was done by Robert Davis Auto Repair in Woodlake, CA, who has worked on AMC’s and many muscle cars. The very rare Ram Air air cleaner is in place, although the plastic snorkel that attaches to the cleaner is missing, as are the flaps for the hood scoop. These are available from several AMC enthusiast sources online should the new owner desire. For better cooling the heavy duty radiator had an extra row added. Her heavy duty suspension has been rebuilt with urethane bushings and new shock absorbers. New and correctly sized twin exhaust and mufflers were installed. Brakes have all been maintained and restored as needed. Very rare and expensive rear window slats were also installed. She still wears her original 14-inch AMC rally wheels. Tires are T/A radials, but were showing age, so in the next few days and before the auction endswe plan to have brand new tires installed for the next fortunate owner.Looking inside you will notice new and correct Ventilair seat upholstery and carpets from Legendary that were installed. The dash/center console still maintain their original woodgrain overlays, and the headliner is original. All the important instruments and gauges and lights work as they should, but if we recall correctly the courtesy light doesn't turn on when the doors are opened. Could be simply a matter of new bulbs, but we can't say for sure as we've never attempted to trouble shoot However, the clock works! She was originally equipped with factory A/C yet the components are no longer with the car.
In her trunk there is of course no rust, and all the factory seams appear in tact indicating noprevious panel damage. You will find a full-sized spare tire along with a jack and AMC inflation canister. Also, the battery has beenrelocated to the trunk forimproved weight distribution.Even after sitting for a week or two, her engine fires up instantly and comes to rest at a smooth idle. Once on the road when you depress the throttle you better hold on because her powerful and smooth engine instantly comes roaring to life, propelling the car rapidly and confidently down the road with aggression and purpose. She rides straight and steady down the road and brakes confidently without any pulling to either side. This is a southern California car formerly owned by AMC/Chrysler/Jeep dealer and collector John Chess in Van Nuys, CA and is therefore free of rust. The undercarriage is clean and rust free. It has been owned forthe last 10 years by an AMC and classic car enthusiast, someone who owned, repaired and drove Gremlins, Concords, Matadors and several AMX’s and Javelins over the years, and who still owns a 70 Javelin Mark Donohue signature edition. She is routinely driven and maintained by a collector and is driven everywhere with confidence. Being that she does get driven and that many components remain in their original condition, as with any older and used car, upon close inspection there are a few minor blemishes on the paint and trim, andwithin the interior there is some plastic trim that has cracked. Please refer to the photos and if you have questions please ask.
Notice the link below where you may view a short video clip of the car in action. We also plan to post more photos soon after the auction has begun, so please keep looking for updates.

We have been asked if the car is "matching numbers." It is not, the 390 is an AMC factory replacement engine. AMC didn't use a "matching numbers" system as other manufacturers did. See below. Also, please view the additional photos of the engine plate on the valve cover, the ID plateon the glovebox (AMX 17328, and the gray looking blemish is just a shadow), and the aluminum door jamb plate with build data...

Wikipedia explains...

American Motors did not provide identification on the engine block, known as VIN stamping, as some other car manufacturers had been doing at that time. Other than the actual displacement, there was no way to associate a vehicle with the original "born with" engine...there is no engine "numbers matching" test for AMXs or any other AMC automobiles.[108]

AMC affixed a small plate with a number to the center of the dash (1968-1969) or to the glovebox door (1970). These are random numbers.[94] They do not coincide with any other identifying number such as the car's VIN code, dealer or zone order, production sequence, nor build date.[16] For example, the numbers on the 1970 models ranged from 014469 to 18584.[

On Apr-02-16 at 22:43:23 PDT, seller added the following information:

A rim low steering wheel is included, the rubber is good but the plastic is cracked. The wheel would need restoration to match the high quality of the car. This is still a valuable and rare item.
A set of new TA radials is scheduled to be installed next week.

On Apr-03-16 at 08:41:10 PDT, seller added the following information:

Note the earlier update mentioned a "Rim Low" steering wheel, but as you all likely realized, it was supposed to be "Rim Blow".
Also, we neglected to mention that the original points-type distributor comes with the car.

On Apr-06-16 at 15:07:37 PDT, seller added the following information:

An update on the new tires, they are being installed tomorrow, they are BF Goodrich TA radials just like these in this size 225/70 14 inchhttp://www.ebay.com/itm/P225-70R14-BFG-RADIAL-T-A-RAISED-WHITE-LETTER-TIRE-/221715243912?hash=item339f422388:g:hyUAAMXQVT9Srz7C&vxp=mtr
Also, some have asked about the paint job, it was done by a now retired gentleman, Dave Lombard. He did body/paint/restoration work for Mountain Mopars in CA for dozens of award winning Mopars such as Cudas, Chargers, Superbirds, Challengers and so forth.
