Description

Summer is around the corner and this convertible is perhaps one of the most fun and beautiful cars on the road. With an 8-cylinder engine and fiberglass body its fast and gets more positive attention than any car I've ever owned. It was recently commissioned by the Miami Heat NBA team to use in its clothing advertisements and appears on the Miami Heat NBA Website and Clothing Store.

Since I drove this car in South Florida I wanted an A/C system installed and had one built 5 months ago. It cost me $2,500 to build and install and it blows very cold air. Its handy when you're at a traffic light. One of the nice things about owning this car is that the parts are all easy to come by and cheap. You won't find yourself spending a lot of money fixing the car. I'm sadly selling the car because I'm moving to a new apartment that only has 2 parking spaces.

Here is a video overview of the car I made a couple weeks ago. You're welcome to come by to see the car in person. I can also send you more photos by email or text.

The sturdy fiberglass body is a dead-ringer for the original, and unlike so many replicas, they clearly went to great lengths to get the little stuff exactly right. The flaring pontoon style fenders, the sloping enclosed radiator shell that was radical for the period, and the car’s defining feature, the pointed “boat tail” have all been expertly rendered. The bright yellow paint was recently touched up and there’s no arguing that it’s dramatic and extremely flashy. Finish quality is quite nice, with smooth surfaces and excellent gaps, and there are no squeaks and rattles owing to the sturdy build quality.

The recently upgraded interior is substantially more updated than the bodywork, with gorgeous two-tone buckets tucked snugly together in the tiny cockpit. The darker leather is actually ostrich skin that adds interest and texture to the upholstery, and the door panels have been finished using the same hides for a wonderful look. Twin instrument panels made of oak add to the close-coupled feel, with the driver enjoying a full array of white-faced gauges from Classic Instruments, all stashed behind a replica banjo steering wheel atop a tilt/telescope steering column. Despite the pointed tail, there’s reasonable storage space accessible through a golf bag door on the passenger’s side. A top cover is included, but there is no top, although one could be easily made.

While the original was powered by a supercharged straight-8, this one is significantly more reliable and easy to service being a 351 cubic inch Ford V8. The Ford LTD chassis was lengthened to match the Auburn’s original 127-inch wheelbase, but it keeps all its familiar hardware, including the powerful V8 and 3-speed automatic transmission. A few chrome dress-up items give you something to look at under the butterfly hood, but since the show isn’t under the skin, they focused on reliability and service access instead. Underneath there’s an independent front suspension with power steering and power disc brakes, while the live axle out back hangs on trailing arms, coil springs, and air shocks. A single exhaust system is quiet and unobtrusive, and the car is as easy to drive as a late-model. Five new genuine wire wheels were painted to match the body and wear 235/75/15 wide whitewall radials. Car is being sold As Is with no warrantee. Please feel free to inspect the vehicle before bidding. Seller can help arrange for shipping. Odometer is not accurate.

Car is available to be inspected at 30th and Biscayne Blvd in Miami at Collector's private garage. Please inquire for viewing instructions.
