It's time to let go of my cherished E30. I bought this car over a year ago, and have LOVED it. I'm an enthusiast, and sold my 2011 BMW M3 and replaced it with this. So much fun. Light weight, loves to rev, loves to get sideways, and offers a tremendously rewarding driving experience. I have another kid on the way and can't keep it since it's just too small for my growing family. I've redone SO much on this car and I'll try to list everything. I've got receipts and documentation for almost everything I've done except a few here or there that got used as oil rags out of desperation.
The good:NEVER been in an accident of any kind. Every single panel is original and all of them still have the VIN sticker on them. I've verified this on EVERY panel. Amazing!!
I've done ALL the hard and expensive work for you. I've gone through EVERY system on the car, and it's mechanically sound and will last many many years and miles! These engines are known to run for 300K miles.
Awesome interior. I literally pulled out the ENTIRE interior and replaced the seats, door panels, tons of trim and plastic bits, carpet, anything broken or worn, the entire HVAC (AC and heating) system with new one, and countless other parts. I included a photo of the interior when I had it stripped to metal.
SUPER solid car. No rust problems with this thing. super dry underneath. It was a Florida car, and since I have NEVER driven it during the winter, it's never seen salty roads. I cannot stress enough how rust-free this thing is underneath.
Great tires with only 6 months use on them. They'll last a long time!
It's ORIGINAL - This car has not been modified or DIY'd. The only major mods from stock are upgraded steering rack, shocks, and springs. They're slightly lower than stock and a bit firmer. I also did the "mess under the intake" mod where I removed many old hoses and leak points and simplified the cooling system. All new hoses were used. This was no easy job and is a huge improvement over stock. The steering rack comes from an E46 330ZHP, which is a faster rack than the slow E30 stock rack, and gives a much firmer, sportier feel. One of the best mods you can do to an E30 hands down.
The motor. It's got a SUPER strong motor. You see in the pic a compression test I did. All cylinders at 170 pounds. Very great sign. See photo of intake valve. All of them are spotless and the previous owner maintained this thing meticulously.
The bad:The paint is a respray. It was not a super expensive job so the paint looks a bit crappy in spots. I've toyed with the idea of repainting it, wrapping it with vinyl, or plasti-dipping it. I've even thought about "rusting" the paint to make it look like a rat rod but I'm a coward and don't have the guts to sand off the paint and let my car rust on purpose!
There's a crack down the center of the dash (show me an E30 without a dash crack). You can see it in one of the pics. A crack-free dash will cost you about $150-200 bucks and an afternoon to replace it.
No stereo. I wired the entire thing for a bangin' sound system but haven't added any speakers or a head unit. The exhaust system is a great sound system!
I don't have the AC system charged. I replaced the whole HVAC system and didn't charge the AC as it was during the fall when I changed it and didn't need AC. I planned to charge it this summer. Your call. Heater works GREAT and blows super hot!
The moonroof. Previous owner must have had some leaks, so he caulked the moonroof closed. The caulk was cracking when I got it, so I cut out all the caulk and covered the moonroof with a piece of matte black vinyl wrap. Most people can't even tell that it's a wrap and assume it's a smoked glass sunroof. You could maybe get it back to functional but I figured I'd eventually weld it shut and call it a full-blown coupe without a moon roof.
It could use rear subframe bushings. I believe they're clapped out, and could use new bushings. For stock ones, a pair will run about $25-40. It's not a hard job but takes a while and some standard tools. Nothing fancy.
