It’s said that BMW owners are some of the most meticulous and caring car owners in the world…and this Karmann bodied example, residing with the same family for 32 years, shows it!
The BMW New Six CS (internal name BMW E9) was a two-door coupe built for BMW by Karmann from 1968 to 1975. It was developed from the New Class- based BW 2000 CS coupe which was enlarged to hold the BMW m30 straight-6 engine used in the E3 sedan. The E9 platform, especially the 3.0 CSL homologation special, was very successful in racing, especially in European Touring Championship (ETCC) and the Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft (DRM). This helped to establish BMW’s status as a sporty driver’s car.
This rare sunroof version of the e9 boasts a restoration involving a full strip to bare metal, and painted to Verona Red–a period BMW OEM color. All the trim is present (with new front and rear “Roundels”) and has a brilliant finish. Both the front and rear bumpers fit nicely and show extremely well. The weather stripping is very good with little or no signs of drying, tearing or shrinkage. The factory manual sunroof opens and closes easily. The aftermarket wheels appear in very good condition little or no marring or curb rash. Both paint and body are in fantastic condition showing only very minor bubbling on the left front fender in a small isolated area.
The original appearing black leather interior was an excellent color selection for the Verona Red exterior paint color, thus making this superb CS even more uncommon… and beautiful. Both the front and rear seats provide a soft but firm feel ideal for every day travel or “spirited” touring in the county side. All gauges and lights work well, though factory power windows are disabled. Switches remain in the center console, but lifts are now operated by manual cranks. Remaining mostly original, the carpet, headliner and upholstery are in good condition and very presentable with some minor signs of age. The crack free dashboard appears to be original along with the nice wood veneers.
This highly reconditioned example comes equipped with a dual Zenith down draft set up on its original 2.8 Liter M30 inline six cylinder engine mated to a Getrag 4-speed manual transmission, Behr air conditioning (not operable), staggered 16 inch Alpina closed lug alloys, Schroth seat belts, Pioneer stereo with Alpine speakers, Nardi wooden three spoke steering wheel. Recent work performed by the previous owner included changing of all fluids, a tune-up, rebuilt carburetors, fitment of a new brake booster, new front calipers, rotors and pads as well as new drums and shoes in back. Though built with drums on the rear axles, they’ve been upgraded to E21 320i units for improved stopping performance. Also included are 16 inch Alpina closed lug alloys with sport rated tires. Included with some receipts for service work performeed in the last 20 years.
Overall this BMW is an excellent testament to classic styling, build quality and diligent ownership, it would be a challenge to find a comparable model in this great of condition and originality.
This iconic coupe epitomizes the early European seventies when the e9 BMW was the most recognizable figure from Bavaria! GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!
