Further cleanout of surplus vintage cars and parts: This is a no reserve auction and the BMW will be sold regardless of price, on or off auction.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This particular auction is for an original authentic, one owner, (I am technically the 2nd owner), running and driving, matching numbers, vintage 1970 BMW 2002 Coupe in it's original colors as shown. It is not a typical run of the mill 2002, it is just an honest unmolested original survivor that has been with the original owner in Atlanta since 1970, where he ordered it on the German European delivery program in 1970 and picked it up in Germany. A copy of his original 8-20-1970 European delivery sales order and order confirmation from Hoffman Motors in New York is included. It was ordered in the Granada red color with black upholstery. Optional equipment was reclining seats, radial tires, tachometer, tinted glass, torsion bar stabilizers, bumperettes, lockable gas cap and chrome exhaust tip. Total cost at that time was $3247.20. A large stack of repair and maintenance bills totaling about $15,000 go with the car - they cover factory BMW maintenance work from 1976 through 2011. The original clear Georgia title and owners manual (a lot of the pages are stuck together) are included. The original owner passed away in 2012 and the car has been sitting outside uncovered for the past 4 years - the reason for the sheet metal rust, scale and paint deterioration as shown. (Check the more important chassis and underside of the car though - they are excellent). The car had been painted the factory Granada red color once many years ago and the owner was going to have it painted again when he passed away. This is a good one owner survivor for someone who is proficient at doing their own work and sheet metal repair. I do not detail my cars for sale but I DO wash and clean them so that you and I can clearly see the good and bad points. Nothing is hidden from view under years of filth, etc. I will answer all email questions and take additional photos of any specific area on request.

ENGINE:

Starts immediately and runs extremely well - quiet and smooth with excellent oil pressure, no noises, no overheating - but it does smoke blue out of the tailpipe.

TRANSMISSION/ CLUTCH/ DIFFERENTIAL:

The original 4 speed transmission engages and shifts easily into all 4 gears and reverse with no grinding or noises. It has only been driven up and down our driveway for a short test drive but all 4 gears and reverse engage easily and seem to be in good working order - unsure about the syncros because we did not take it out on the open road to test that, however I see from one of the work orders that all syncros were replaced at 70,000 miles.. .... A new hydraulic clutch master and slave cylinder were also replaced just before storage in Atlanta at a cost of $674.50.

ENGINE COMPARTMENT:

Original paint. Very nice, original and straight with no damage and is clean and complete. A new alternator and battery were replaced just before storage in Atlanta at a cost of $418.81.

TRUNK COMPARTMENT:

Original paint. Nice and solid with the exception of rust through in the spare wheel well and rust through in the bottom right and left corners where attached to the lower fender area. Includes spare tire/wheel and original jack and lug wrench.

EXTERIOR SHEET METAL, BODY PANELS:

Major scale surface rust and rust through as shown on most of the exterior sheet metal from being uncovered in outside storage for the past 4 years. The looks are a bit deceiving however - the chassis and underneath are in excellent condition. The main rocker panels also seem to be in quite good solid condition except for the very front and rear areas. The bottom of one door is good, the bottom of the other is gone.

CHROME:

Bumpers would need rechroming - the rest of the brightwork is mostly aluminum and serviceable.

PAINT:

Quite obviously needs paint, although it would make a good camoflage Escape From New York coupe.

GLASS:

All of the original tinted glass is good - nothing broken. Door windows are very difficult to roll up and down - they will need work. Drivers door side window has some vertical scratches from rubbing.

CHASSIS/FLOORS:

The strong chassis and underside are the saving grace and best feature on the car. The exterior photos are sort of frightening but it is all sheet metal issues. Floors are in very good condition with the exception of the area directly under the gas pedal - an isolated area that is rusted through and will need repair.

INTERIOR/UPHOLSTERY:

Most of the original salt and pepper carpeting, although needing replacing, is still intact. The rest of the upholstery is all original, needing some work on the seats.

DASH AREA:

Still looks very nice - has a few cracks in the padded dash top. All original gauges are intact and working.

AIR CONDITIONING:

None.

TIRES & WHEELS:

Old - should be tossed out.

EXHAUST:

The exhaust system is strong and quiet and looks like it was probably newly replaced just before the car was put up in storage.

SUSPENSION/BRAKES/STEERING:

Looks good in that department. Looks complete with nothing missing and no damage. Brakes are a little grabby but they have not been used for at least 4 years.

WORKING:

The following items work well: Fuel gauge, oil pressure light, alternator light, water temperature gauge, tachometer, speedometer, dash lights, high and low beam headlights, alternator, heater motor, windscreen wipers, windscreen washers, horn, tail lights, license plate lights, brake lights, manual choke, inside bonnet release, cigar lighter has never been used. NOT WORKING:

Turn signals, emergency flashers, tripmeter, odometer.

MISCELLANEOUS:

As of this writing Hagertys used car values lists the 1970 BMW 2002 at $7200 fair #4 condition, $11,000 good #3 condition and $21,100 excellent #2 condition, with recent prices starting a spike upwards rapidly. This is a 46 year old used classic car - it is as described as shown and is not guaranteed. Although it starts, runs, drives and stops it needs to be transported by trailer to it's destination. PAPERWORK:

Comes with the clean original Georgia title in the original owners name. Also a bill of sale and a stack of maintenance repair bills from 1976 through 2011.

FACTORY ID PLATES:

The Vehicle identification ID plates and engine number plates are all intact, matching and correct as shown.

INSPECTION OF CAR:

Inspections are welcome and encouraged at any time before the auction ends.

SHIPPING:

Shipping or collecting the car is the buyers responsibility. If necessary I can assist with shipping arrangement but it is usually best for the buyer to acquire shipping from their local source. I will assist with loading the car.

PAYMENT & BIDDING:

Contact me if you have less than 5 feedbacks before bidding or your bid WILL be cancelled. A $500 non refundable deposit via Paypal is due immediately after the auction closes. The balance is due within 3 days via wire transfer, priority or overnight mail with a bank cashiers check. Full payment is to be made IN ADVANCE of collecting the car.
