Description

Up for sale is my "Black Betty". I love this car and don't want to sell it, but I just don't have the time to invest in it anymore. I have owned this car since 2001, and I have put only 67k miles on it since then. I have had it painted black(it was tan with tan interior from the factory), and got most of the way through a conversion to all black interior. The driver seat, door panels, and center console are black leather units from a 1994 donor car(this one originally had only leather seats, and vinyl door panels/center console. The passenger seat has been dyed with Feibings oil dye(could probably use one more coat), and the splotches on the tan trim are also dye. I started dying the back seat, and the center armrest and headrests in the back are from another black interior donor car. The leather is in pretty good shape, with the only tear being the top center seams of the rear backrest are coming apart(no actual tears in the leather). I don't have a driver seat armrest. The carpet was dyed black with a spray fabric dye, and it has faded somewhat in a few places. I have converted it from automatic to 5 speed(Getrag 260/6 with a Z3 shifter). It has a 3.64lsd differential, with custom driveshaft, new flex disc(guibo) and driveshaft center bearing. The entire exhaust system from the manifolds back was replaced 3 years ago with a system from a low mileage <100k donor. The front suspension has been lowered 2", has brand new Bilstein HD inserts, all new control arms(lowers are upgraded aluminum units), sway bar links, and I have the new tie rods, pitman arm, and drag link, but haven't put them in yet(those were all replaced about 40k miles ago. I also have all new rear suspension wear parts, but have not installed them, either. It has BMW staggered wheels from an E39(18x8 front, 18x9 rear), that have been painted black(I don't know how good the paint job is, I just got them) with new tires on back and decent tires on front. Cross drilled and slotted brake rotors, with rebuilt and hi-temp painted calipers(pads have about 3k miles on them). The engine runs perfectly and starts right up every time with no smoke, no hesitation. However, if you let it idle in the hot weather, the temp needle will start to rise after a few minutes(absolutely no problems in normal driving), so it could probably use a coolant system flush, the cooling fans are working fine. It is due for a valve adjustment(I even have the new v/c gasket for the job). It has about 290k miles on it. I don't know the exact mileage, because it showed 22k when I got it, but PO told me it had a new computer put in at @200k(this is probably why it had a rebuilt title, although I have never had a computer/electrical related problem, other than an occasional blown fuse). The 5 speed transmission I put in was used, and was quiet and shifted ok, but was a little notchy, so I bought another one, and put it in, and it was a little notchy also, and has now developed a leak, although I put new seals in it before installation. So I have 2 decent transmissions(including shifters, linkages, etc), but both probably have worn synchros. Purchase will include both transmissions/shifters/linkages, as well as another almost new clutch/disc(The one in it now has <1k miles on it). All power windows, doors, sunroof, and lighting work, with the exception of the driver side fog light, and the dash dimmer switch(the dash lights work with a jumper in the plug, but there is no dimmer function($5 junkyard part). The drivers power memory seat will not adjust properly via seat switch, however all motors work fine, and if you use a jumper on the switch terminals, it works perfectly(bad seat module?). The fuel gauge does not work, but the OBC will show the range until empty, so the sending unit is fine. I upgraded the fuel injectors a few years ago, redid the headliner in black recently(but this is south Florida, so there are a few staples holding up part of it already). It has a very nice(and very loud) custom sound system with 8 speakers, including 2 10" woofers in the trunk, usb input and bluetooth. The air conditioner works, but has a leak, and needs a recharge as of this posting(it will keep you cool early in the morning, but can't keep up with the Florida sun). Upgraded headlights with Hella style smoked Euro/smiley projectors, crystal taillights, that have been smoked also, and all corner lights/turn signals have been blacked out. Very high quality window tint job is 10+ years old, with zero fading/discoloration, or wrinkling/bubbles. The only thing left that has not been blacked out/tinted are the fog lights. I have replaced/repaired countless other small items that will not have to be worried about for years to come. Also included is a trunk FULL of spare parts; far too many to list all, but include gaskets, seals, light bulbs, hardware, clips, grommets, cables, valves, solenoids, trim pieces, blah blah blah, you get the picture. This is not a car for someone who takes it to the dealer every time a problem pops up, unless you have deep pockets. This is a car for a seasoned DIYer. It is a wonderful car, and will bring lots of pleasure(and lots of looks) to someone who has the time and know how to keep it running right. I just don't have the time anymore, so I am letting her go to the next BMW lover. This car could also be parted out for a nice profit by someone with the proper resources(not me). It has been my daily driver for the better part of 15 years, so she is definitely road worthy, but she has not been on a long road trip in probably 10 years, so keep that in mind, as shipping/pickup will be solely the responsibility of the winning bidder. I know this is a long read, but I want to give the best description possible. Please ask me any questions that I didn't answer in the posting. Thanks for looking, good luck, and happy bidding.
