MotoeXotica Classic Cars is proud to present a 1954 Buick Special Convertible. Ad copy at the time posited the ’54 Buicks as “The Beautiful Buy,” and you may think so, too! This model has Buick design hallmarks common to the era – waterfall grille, triple ventiports on each front fender (signifying the model’s junior status in the line-up) and bodyside sweepspears along with rudimentary rear tailfins and vertically stacked bulleted taillamps.

Built in Buick’s Flint, Michigan assembly plant, it left the line with the following standard equipment: air cleaner and silencer; automatic glove compartment light; cigarette lighter; direction signals; dual horns; high air intake ventilation system; self-locking parking brake; and wraparound windshield. This particular example also has the optional heater and defroster.

Originally finished in Arctic White (code 2), it is now dressed in Titian Red with an Arctic White power-folding convertible top, which is in satisfactory shape. The car’s paint and trim are in overall very good order while the windows, including the single-piece Panoramic wraparound windshield, are clear and intact and in overall satisfactory order. The convertible’s rear window is in mediocre condition, however. The Special’s lights are in better-than-average order and the chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body, however the front bumper shows some minor blemishes. The car’s bodywork is solid and straight, the engine bay is very tidy and the battery looks very good.

This big Buick rides on Broadway Classic whitewall tires, size 225/75R15 at all four corners. Each tire surrounds a chrome wire wheel, which are in satisfactory shape, while the tires appear new.

Under the hood is a 264 CID “Nailhead” V-8 engine with dual exhausts. Backing this motor is a two-speed Twin Turbine Dynaflow automatic transmission and a 3.90 rear end. Driver convenience features include power windows and power front seat.

Inside, the car’s red and white (code 45) interior is in overall very good order. The front and rear seats, with red and Ivory Cordaveen look very good, as does the complementing red carpet. The massive, three-spoke steering wheel, done in black and chrome, is in satisfactory shape and dominates the driver’s side of the interior. The inner door liners are in decent shape while the instrument panel is in very good condition. Rounding out the interior is a column shifter, original AM radio and a Pioneer AM/FM stereo with CD player.

The 1954 Specials had an all-new body and chassis, much wider and lower and were now equipped with the all-new, more powerful “Nailhead” V-8 engines. The 264 CID V-8 was produced in 1954 and 1955 and replaced the former 263 straight eight-cylinder and was the only engine available for the economy “Special” series during its run. The smallest displacement Nailhead, it is a small-bore version of the 322, sharing stroke and deck height but having its own 3.625” bore.

Competition to this Buick in 1954 included DeSoto’s Firedome Convertible, Dodge’s Royal Convertible, Hudson’s Hornet Six Convertible, Mercury’s Monterey Custom Convertible, Oldsmobile’s Super 88 Convertible and Pontiac’s Chieftain Convertible.

If you’re looking for a classic convertible to cruise in, take to a local car show or just to take your wife and grandchildren for a spin to get ice cream, you should come by MotoeXotica Classic Cars to take a look at this car with the “Million Dollar Ride.” After all, wouldn’t you really rather have a Buick?
