THE 1972 BUICK CENTURION

In 1956, Buick introduced the Centurion Motorama show car. It was clothed in a fiberglass body and painted in red and white. It had a bubble top roof that was modeled after the aero-industry.

In the early 1970s, Buick introduced the Centurion production car and it would remain in production for only a short time, ending in 1973. It was similar in design to the Buick LeSabre but had different badging and a different front-end. There was less chrome trim, and no portholes commonly found on the larger series Buicks. The Centurion essentially replaced the Wildcatas the sporty iteration ofBuicksthree full-size car lines, and was offered as a convertible and a four-door hardtop. What also separated the car from the LeSabre was that when the car would be ordered or recognized as a Centurion it would be branded as a 4P as the first two letters of the Vehicle Identification Number.

The Centurion was offered initially with only the 455cu in big-block V8 in two power output ranges determined by the presence of either a single or dual exhaust. The '71 Centurion produced 315hp@4400 rpm and 450lbft of torque@2800 rpm with the base 455. The following year, the industry switched to SAE power measurement, which measured horsepower with all accessories and a full exhaust system installed. For 1972 and 1973, the 455 cubic-inch engine produced 255 hp and 360 ft-lbs of torque under the new SAE measurement. The 350 cubic-inch version produced only 195 horsepower and 290 ft-lb of torque.

Interior trim was upgraded from LeSabres with a notchback bench seat including a center armrest as standard equipment along with more luxurious cloth-and-vinyl or all-vinyl upholstery.

In March 1971, the three-speed Turbo Hydra-matic transmission became standard on all Centurions. Variable-ratio power steering and power front disc brakes were standard equipment during the entire model year.

The 1972 Centurion featured minor appearance changes including a revised vertical bar grille and taillight lenses. The Turbo Hydra-matic transmission, variable ratio power steering and power front disc brakes were again standard equipment.

MECHANICALS

THIS 1972 BUICK CENTURION IS POWERED BYITS BIG-BLOCK 455 CUBIC INCH V-8 ENGINE THAT PRODUCED 315 HORSEPOWER IN ITS STOCK FORM. THE HORSEPOWER IS NOW AN ESTIMATED 35 HP HIGHER DUE TO THE REMOVAL OF THE SMOG PUMP, CARBURETOR UPGRADES AND THE ADDITION OF ELECTRONIC IGNITION AND DUAL EXHAUST. GAS MILEAGE IS ALSO IMPROVED FROM STOCK.

POWER IS TRANSMITTED THROUGH ITS TURBO HYDRA-MATIC AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION TO THE REAR END. THE ENGINE RUNS VERY SMOOTHLY AND STRONG, AND THE CAR DRIVES EXCEPTIONALLY WELL! IT TRACKS STRAIGHT, AND THE SUSPENSION, STEERING AND BRAKES FEEL GREAT.
