This first generation Buick Century was a factory hot rod, so someone knew they were doing making this custom build. Still looking very much like it did decades ago, this wonderful 1939 sedan has been thoughtfully updated with a performance-built small block V8 and loads of creature comforts, all without altering the fantastic look of the original design. General Motors had some of the best looking bodies around in the late 1930s, and Buick was the cream of the crop. With a handsome dual grille that coordinates nicely with the bumper shape, flowing fenders, and handsome trim that runs the length of the car, this one is a winner even before we look at the more modern performance touches. Another look at the front end reveals the chrome headlights and some great custom pinstriping around the light housing and the Buick logo. This design is continued around the door handles and on the trunk. The paint might look like a classic two-tone combination, but it takes advantage of more modern practices to give it a nice luster in the sunshine. And the white on the top is so bright, it's the perfect match for the whitewall tires. The final touch of this custom build is an aggressive set of KMC wheels.Just like the exterior, there was a lot of planning and investment to mix old and new worlds inside this Buick. It starts with the gray pattern cloth seats that coordinate nicely with the door panels, carpeting, and headliner. All of these look period-correct but are in far better condition than anything from the 30s. You'll slip behind the original Buick Eight wheel and look over the original bright instrument panel, but you'll also quickly pick up on some nicely integrated modern upgrades. Your right arm rest comfortably on the new floor-mounted gearstick. Ahead of that is an AM/FM stereo with connections for satellite radio. There's also air conditioning running modern R-134a for easy servicing. So this is one classic that has plenty of comfortable cruising potential.But the best upgrade is reserved for the engine bay. The badging isn't lying about being an eight-cylinder car, but one peek under the hood, and you'll realize it's now a 350 cubic-inch small block. These have bulletproof reliability and plenty of upgrades available. In fact, this one already backs up its hot rod appearance with performance components like an Edelbrock four-barrel carburetor, Edelbrock intake, and an intimidating dual exhaust. It's easy to get moving down the road thanks to the TH350 three-speed automatic transmission and power steering. Also, behind the classic whitewall appearance is the modern grip BF Goodrich tires.
