You are bidding on a BARN FIND 1956 Buick Special “Series 40” 2-Door Hardtop. This beautiful Buick Special is in mostly-original condition with the original rebuilt 322ci Fireball V8 motor and 3-speed manual transmission. This Buick is very solid and has all of her pieces! Gorgeous styling and all the brite work makes this a beautiful car to restore. Yes, this Buick runs and drives beautifully! Even though it was partially-restored in the early 90’s it was regularly driven for years but not very much at all in the last few. It is owned by an older gentleman and he has not been able to drive it much during the last decade due to illness. The car has 89k original miles and purrs like a kitten. Floors, frame, and body are very solid. No it’s not perfect nor a simple repaint to make it a $30k car but it’s all there! You can just drive it as is or restore it. A lot of investment was put into it over the years with new seats, upgraded power brakes, new slave cylinder, new brake system, shocks, springs, and steering components. Mechanically it’s sound and reliable!
The Body is very solid and mostly straight with some minor dents and a couple of minor rust spots. Paint is old and peeling in places. It was repainted probably in the 70’s by the looks of it. All the stainless and chrome trim is there. Most of the stainless is good with some minor dents in some. All are restorable! The chrome pieces are there but are pitted and will probably need to be replaced.
The bumpers are ok, have minor dents and the front is bent a bit but should be able to be restored. One is missing the bullet but an extra comes with car. There are extra bumper pieces, some will go with the car and some are too large to put into the car for transport but if you pick up the car you can have them. Note… if car is transported the LARGE parts will not go with it.
The glass is in good condition with no cracks or delamination. Windshield does have a wiper mark scratch. Driver’s side vent window is cracked at the bottom but a replacement window goes with it. Driver’s side door mirror glass is cracked. The windows, doors, trunk and hood all operate as they should.
The weatherstrippings appear to be original and in good-to-fair condition.
The Two-tone Black and Red Interior is in varying condition. Seats were recovered in the early 90’s and they still look very nice! The rest is original and in good condition. Door panels and headliner look nice. Rear package tray needs to be replaced from age. All of the pieces are there too – except the passenger-side door sill, which is missing. Dash and components are in good condition with most things working on the dash that I can test. All the gauges (odometer, speedo, temp, alt) are working but the oil pressure gauge does not work. All the headlights, directionals, marker lights, reverse lights, interior courtesy lights, blower, and E-brake work. Even the window flippers work. The original radio does appear to be working. The steering wheelis in great condition but the horn does not work. Wipers work but the passenger wiper arm is missing a trim piece and the rubber blade.
The Drivetrain appears to be original and the rebuilt 322ci Fireball V8 runs great, idles and drives very well! The motor and heads were rebuilt by a local shop in ’07 and have roughly 5k miles on them. A slightly bigger cam was used and hardened seats were installed. Alternator, starter, fuel pump, and water pump have been replaced in ‘07. The 3-speed manual transmission operates as it should. A new clutch assembly and slave cylinder were installed when the engine was rebuilt. Neither the engine nor trans leak! All of the suspension (springs, king pins and shocks) was replaced in the 90’s. Most of the steering and all of the brake components were replaced in the 90’s too. A new modern power booster and master cylinder were installed several years ago. Radiator and heater core were both rebuilt. There are receipts for the parts and work done.
This Buick is mechanically good! Runs and drives like it did back in the day!
The Undercarriageis in nice condition too. Floor pans and frame are original and in good condition. No major rust or rot issues, just lots of light surface rust. All of the body mounts look intact and in good condition still. I don’t see any patch panels, frame repairs other issues. Yes, I’m sure there will be rust repairs in places. I know in the rear wheel houses where the rockers meet there are rust holes that will need addressed. Dual exhaust system looks good. Tires were replaced several years ago and they still appear to be in good condition with lots of tread. We believe the hubcaps and wheels are from a Roadmaster - not original to the car. It had a front-end alignment in ’07. The gas tank was redone and the support bracket was damaged and a custom support was made.
There are just a few items that are not functioning correctly. I have listed all that I know from going over the car.
Other info: The car has been owned by the current owner since ’91 and is in pretty much original condition with modern power brake set up, tires, hubcaps and a couple of other things probably.
Key works ignition but a button by your left knee is used to start the car.
Car comes with 2 sets of factory keys
Receipts for a lot of the work
Clear Ohio title stating 79,987 Actual miles with 84,667 miles showing on the working odometer.

I have made my best effort to accurately represent the car based on my expertise as a vehicle builder, what I have observed in evaluating it and preparing it for sale, and what I have been told by the owner, but this is the extent of my knowledge. This vehicle is also for sale locally. You are welcome to arrange a viewing of this vehicle. Again, this is a classic vehicle that has been driven and enjoyed. It’s not perfect or a museum piece so there may be minor imperfections in the body, brite work and glass. Anything to note is listed above.
