Description

Please allow me introduce you to my beloved 1959 Cadillac series 62 4 door hardtop named Aurora. She has been a loyal friend for the last 3 years. Like any healthy relationship we've had our ups and downs but she ALWAYS put a huge smile on my face whenever I take her out for a cruise. Aurora makes even the most mundane trips a joy and never fails to receive tons of thumbs up, smiles, stories and the occasional offer to buy her as I drive around town. I often catch people taking photos of her and my clients love it when I use Aurora to drive them around town or to the jobsite. Imagine driving a car so great and cool that it stops traffic.
For the last two years during winter I have put her into the capable hands of Pearmain's Performance in Grand Junction. Kelly Pearmain is a legendary mechanic from a drag racing family and a bona fide car whisperer, tuningmore performance out of the original 390 than I ever thought possible. The engine is STRONG and healthy and has that great unmistakable burblefound only in big, carbureted V8's.
The first year, Kelly rebuilt the drum brakes and lines, replaced all the engine seals and freeze plugs, replaced the fuel lines and moved the fuel pump to the rear which eliminated vapor lock forever, added new Pertronix ignition system conversion kit, replaced the carburetor with a new Edelbrock 1406 carb jetted for high altitude, and replaced the leaky exhaust manifold. Now there is no exhaust leak and driving is so much more enjoyable without having to drive with the windows open. That year, we also replaced the original under performing generator with a brand new alternator that looks exactly like the original generator.
This year I replaced the steering gear and completely rebuilt the 4 speed automatic transmission with a replacement valve body. Now driving and steering this huge finned car is factory fresh, with the transmission finding a lower gear under throttle and then dropping into overdrive for effortless interstatecruisingat 75 MPH.
I installed a new color code correct headliner from SMS fabrics and had the original radio completely reconfigured by a genius I found on the Cadillac LaSalle club forum who rebuilt the inner workings so that it has signal seeking Wonderbar AM/FM, auxiliary input and Bluetooth. NowI can answer the phone with the original Cadillac radio.I also replaced both speakers in their original locations.
The wipers work great and so does the windshield washer with the original mason jar. The heater and blower motor work great. A very comfortable car to drive even in Colorado winter.I fixed everything that was leaking. All gaugesand turn signals work. Parking brake engages, and door locks and trunk work with what I believe to be original keys. Hand cranking windows work. It's nice not having to worry aboutby glitchyelectric motors that intermittently work or break down. I installed new belts and hoses all around and 5 new tires as of April. The engine bay was tidied up and the battery tray and a fender skirt bracket freshened up.
I decided to leave the interior and the exterior much the same as I found her with the exception that I replaced the broken driver and passenger window glass with new E-Z eye glass. Her interior is probably original, with the usual driver's seat wear and tear. Her paint is a great Vegas Turquoise color but not original and I'd describe it as a 20 footer with some sun fading since she has spent her summers with me parked outdoors. Her carpets are decent and her windshield is old and has some delamination in the corners but all the auto glass is solid without any cracks. You'll find a little rust here and there but nothing serious as it has taken years of ownership and maintenance for me to even notice. The chrome is all there with some pitting and blemishes. Fastidious owners may want to replace the rubber but I just turn the radio up louder when I drive fast.
All in all, Aurora is the kind of car you could drive anywhere, anytime without excuses and have loads of fun while doing it. I would not hesitate to drive her across the country. With almost no factory options, she's a rare thing and not some fancy Eldorado that stays in the garage and never gets driven. Obviously she's been taken care of and loved for a very long time and our time together was a great life experience for me. I only hope her new owner appreciates the unicorn that she is.
