Description

Go big or go home, that's the bottom line with this high-profile 1968 Chevrolet Camaro. With a pro-street vibe, it offers outrageous paint, a stout big block V8, and enough tire to make this street-legal hammer a legitimate threat just about anywhere it goes. When you're building a Pro Street machine, subtlety is the last thing on your mind, and with that thought at the forefront of their minds, the guys who built this one gave it a gorgeous coat of Hugger Orange. Underneath that paint, however, there's ultra-straight sheetmetal that stretches taut over the Camaro's mechanicals, giving it a crouching look. There's also a 2-inch cowl induction hood and plenty of authentic SS badges, too, so it has the right look, especially with the addition of original-style hood inserts. Is it a real SS? Who cares! It looks right, sits right, and with a blacked-out grille and ducktail spoiler, it certainly looks the part. The work was done a few years ago, but it still looks fantastic, a testament to the guys who did the work. If it's attention you crave, your car has arrived.Despite the radical look outside, the interior is a fairly user-friendly place that gets the "street" part of pro-street exactly right. You'll note factory bucket seats with houndstooth upholstery, stock door panels, a stock dash, center console and even a factory steering column. Gauges are original and include a factory tachometer and factory auxiliary dials down on the console. The Hurst 4-speed shifter is a joy to row through the gears without thinking about breakage and you'll note a few extra switches on the console, which control the power windows. There's a ton of sound-deadening material used inside, so it feels quite civilized, and as a result the AM/FM/iPod stereo sounds pretty darned good. The trunk hasn't been hacked up or filled with fuel cells and batteries, just clean floors that are a reproduction mat away from looking as good as new.The biggest part of Pro Street is the hardware, and this car doesn't disappoint. The block is a 454 cubic inch Chevy V8 that's fully dressed for show as well as go. Starting with a bunch of dress-up parts, including finned Mickey Thompson valve covers and a chrome air cleaner, it's joined by a satin black firewall that gives it the perfect backdrop, as well as carefully hidden wiring and plumbing so it looks ultra-clean. There's a big Holley 4-barrel carburetor atop an Edelbrock intake manifold, so throttle response is snappy and an MSD ignition system lights it up. Ceramic-coated long-tube headers and a custom stainless dual exhaust with an X-pipe and relatively mellow mufflers give it a great sound that's totally tolerable on the street, which is more than we can say about a lot of other pro-street creations. The Muncie 4-speed shifts cleanly, the floors are augmented with subframe connectors, and there's a bulletproof 12-bolt rear end out back. 4-wheel disc brakes, Bilstein shocks, and custom traction bars all give this Camaro better reflexes than you'd ever expect. Factory Rally wheels are really the only choice for a machine like this, and they wear 225/60/15 Dunlops up front and 275/60/15 BFGs out back.Fast, fun, and ready to rock, you show up with this car and you're definitely The Man.
