Continuing on Corvette's mission to become the ‘premier muscle car', the 1964 Chevy Corvette lost the very unpopular split rear window along the fake hood vents and replaced it with a more conventional single-piece rear window. (Owners of the previous year complained about rear visibility.) To improve ventilation a three-speed fan was added. The two simulated air intakes were eliminated from the hood, though their indentations remained. Some the ribs were removed from the car's rocker-panel trim and it gained black paint between the ribs that remained. The wheel covers were also simplified, while the fuel filler/deck emblem received concentric circles around its crossed-flag insignia. The original color-keyed steering wheel rim was now featured in simulated walnut.
A variety of improvement premiered for this year that included higher horsepower 'fuelie' engine options, better insulation and a smoother ride. Available engines were a 327-ci, 250 hp up to a 327-ci, fuel-injected engine capable of 375 hp. Other updates were in improving ride quality with Chevy adding a few suspension refinements. The leaf thickness of the rear transverse spring was altered as well as the front coil springs being changed from constant-rate to progressive or variable-rate and being more tightly wound at the top. The revised springs could better absorb both large and small disturbance with their wider damping range, now providing a more comfortable ride without a sacrifice in handling.
Towards the same end, shock absorbers were also reworked. Rough roads caused the standard 1963 shocks to overheat when they were subjected to frequent oscillation at near full vertical wheel travel. For 1964 the new Corvette with a new standard shock within its fluid reservoir a small bag of Freon gas that absorbed heat. More sound insulation and revised body and transmission mounts were added by Chevy for the 1964 Corvette. Placing a new boot around the lever, the mounts also fitted additional bushings to deaden the sound of the shift linkage.
Drivetrain options remained basically the same for this year as it did the previous year with four 327 cid V8's, one three- and two four-speed manual transmission and the Powerglide automatic and six axle ratios. The two less-powerful engines returned with 250 and 300 bhp on 10.5:1 compression, but the higher performance duo received several noteworthy updates.
The transmission options remained virtually the same for the 1964 year, the two Borg-Warner T-10 four-speeds were replaced with a similar pair of gearboxes that were built at GM's Muncie, Indiana, transmission facility. A Chevy design originally, the transmission had an aluminum case like the B-W box but it came with stronger synchronizers and wider ratios for better durabilty and drivability. The wide-ratio variation was only able to be mated with the 250- and 300-bhp power-plants.
For this year, a total of 8.304 Sting Ray coupes were produced by Chevy, and 13,925 convertibles, rounding up to a total of 22,229 Chevrolet Corvettes produced for the 1964 year. The Sting Ray was proving so popular, so Chevrolet only needed to make innovative updates to the '64 Corvette.
