1971 REAL DEAL RUST FREE MOSTLY ORIGINAL Z-28
Description
This is not a trailer queen, this is a really nice, real deal 1971 Texas Z-28 you can actually drive, show and have fun with for not much $$, and never loose any $$ if you take care of it. I think it is safe to say someone invested almost as much in this car restoring it to this condition as my BIN price. That assumes they owned the car originally. The car always is stored in my heated garage, often under cover. I did drive it in the rain once, good thing I had rain X on the windshield as the wiper arms have never been installed, I have them.
Nut and bolt restoration in 2000ish. Mostly original numbers matching car that has been driven about 5,000 miles. I pulled the original motor and installed a EFI 383 and 5 speed which I will remove and keep when the car is sold. I removed the original 330/350 because I was not satisfied with how it ran. I took the motor to a reputable machine shop where it was power honed to the next oversized with a deck plate and fitted with new pistons. The rods and crankshaft were checked and made perfect again. They also went thru the heads making them perfect. The entire rotating assembly was rebalanced to perfection. I also have gaskets, new cam and lifters. The motor has not been re assembled. Seems like everyone wants to see what they have. You take the motor home in pieces and re-assemble it as you see fit.
It appears as the only pieces that did not come with the car originally was the short block. This short block is numbered as if it came from a '73 Z-28 which used all of the same part numbers (4 bolt mains, steel crank, good rods etc.). This was probably a warrantee repair. The original distributor is also long gone, as are the exhaust manifolds and the aluminum bell housing. Original deep groove pulleys, power steering (quick ratio) and a Muncie 4 speed transmission is the original and works perfectly. The original "rat tail" Hurst shifter is there, and it too appears as if that was restored, it's nice and tight, shifting as they originally did with a perfect chrome stick.
The car will come with headers and a 2-1/2" X flow Flowmaster exhaust system. The original rear end was factory fitted with 4.10 gears and limited slip. Original 5 spoke Z-28 wheels, trim rings, etc. Original spare with correct wheel and jack in trunk.
All springs, shocks, brakes, bushings tie rod ends ball joints etc. were replaced with new during the restoration. Much of the front suspension was replaced with urethane pieces. I tookeverything apart and made them so you can be greased. Now they are tight and slippery.
The interior is nearly perfect. Acoustic sound deadining material was applied under the carpet. This sound deadener made a world if differance in the quietness of the car. It appears as if all new glass was installed when the car was restored. The carpet is a very premium cut pile rather than the loop pile that would have came with the car. Looks beautiful. Seats are damage free, no rips, tears etc. andfirm with beautiful soft covers. All the gages work as they should. I did replace the original circiut film on the back of the gages as there were some issues resulting from age. I sent the tach out for repair and calibration. Works perfectly. The woodgrain dash fascia has minor damage around the corners. I haven't found one that is nicer so it remains.I had a oil pressure gage made by a gage shop to replace the clock. This looksvery original. Original clock comes with, and it works. Original style shifter boot, trim ring and weather seal help finish the inside, as it was new.
The paint is still very nice, however there are a few battle scars, which would be very easy for a paint guy to deal with. Again this is a driver. I also have 2 bumper sets that come with car. 1 being the original 1 piece front bumper and there are a set of rally sport bumpers. 2 rear bumpers, 1 nice original and 1 new reproduction.
