Literally no other automotive nameplate occupies the same time-tested status as the Suburban. Getting its start all the way back in 1935, some eleven generations later it's the longest continuously running brand in automotive history. This 1972 Chevy Suburban is a fitting homage to that extensive legacy. Combining classic styling with some aesthetic and feature upgrades, it's one seriously tasteful and unique SUV for the ages. Although five generations had hit the market before this one, it was this '72... model in particular that fueled a sharp rise in SUV sales that would carry on to this day. Sure, the earlier versions sold, but this '72 really caught people's attention and sold literally four times better than its counterpart some five years earlier. Look at this Suburban and you can see why. It's got a classic ruggedness to it, sturdier and beefier than earlier versions. Its red exterior complements that timeless look while at the same time giving it a definite vitality. Some well-applied and tasteful modifications combine with the Suburban's standard styling features to create an SUV with a decidedly custom yet utilitarian appearance. Sure, it's a conversation piece, but you could also see yourself behind the wheel, taking the family out on adventures. It sits just a little lower than most, but still with plenty of clearance for its custom wheels. It's got a very distinctive look from the sides, with one door on the driver's side and two on the passenger side. This '72 goes one better in the customization department, adding a set of ambulance-style doors that replace the standard liftgate with an almost gull-wing appearance when open. The spacious chrome grille, bumpers and mirrors look good and very much in place in their stock configuration. Inside is a very comfortable-looking and well thought out interior. Its sheer spaciousness is impressive as well - plenty of room for a contingent of passengers. The modern, high backed bucket seats are decked out in tan with black accents, a color combination mirrored by the two additional bench seats, door panels and balance of the exterior as well, and are accented by tan carpeting below. The dash carries the same red paint as its exterior, with black accents on the glove box, lower trim and instrument panel that visually connect it to the rest of the interior. The black center console, with its ample storage space and cup holders, adds modern convenience. Other modern-day touches include: an updated A/C system that blows nice and cold, a modern AM/FM stereo that occupies the center most position in the stock dash, a set of TV monitors that have been installed into the backs of the headrests for the viewing pleasure of those in the second row and a speaker enclosure that houses a 10" Pioneer subwoofer sits behind the second row and in front of the way-back third row of seating, decked out in carpeting matching the rest of interior. A Chevy 350V8 sits in this amply-sized and exceedingly clean engine compartment that's been decked out in flat black paint that makes the engine and components, including chrome valve covers and air cleaner, really jump out at you. The hoses, belts and wires all look plenty fresh, well-organized and grime free. With its 4-speed automatic transmission, you'll have an easier time dealing with stop and go conditions. Additional conveniences include a tilt column, power steering and power brakes all the way around, with discs in front. The stance on this Suburban is decidedly modern and low, and its sizable 20" rims sporting the signature Chevy bowtie in their centers and wrapped in low profile tires, further its custom look. Underneath, the dual exhaust is surrounded by a nice, straight undercarriage that looks exceedingly unblemished for the decades of duty this venerable SUV has provided.
