Welcome to the wonderful year of 1931. This was the year of a very distinctive Chevrolet. It was a year of many changes. Also, it was the end of an era.
1931 owners are held together by a strong bond because this year of Chevrolet automobiles was quite different from 1930 and 1932. Only a few parts are interchangeable between these years of cars.
The 1931 model was the third year that Chevrolet offered the new 6 cylinder engine as standard equipment. This was also the final year that Chevrolet out-sold Ford by kicking their little 4 cylinder butts..... alas, it was to be short lived when Ford introduced their 8 cylinder flat head in 1932. But the year before that, Chevrolet was still king.
Chevrolet began selling the six-cylinder engine--commonly called the 'Stovebolt Six', and affectionately, 'Cast-Iron Wonder'--in 1929. They made minor improvements to it over the next few years, and it performed much better than its four-cylinder rivals, and inspired the slogan, 'Get a Six for the price of a Four.'
Chevrolet also differed from Ford in the way its bodies were built; while Ford's bodies were constructed primarily of steel, Chevrolet car bodies used a large proportion of wood in their "composite body" construction. Their advertising heralded this: "This is not only the strongest, safest, most durable type known, but it is exactly the same type used in the highest-priced cars. A framework of selected hardwood is fortified at all points of stress by staunch steel bracing. Over this strong framework are mounted sturdy steel panels, so that the wood reinforces the steel and the steel reinforces the wood."
