Description

1967 Chevy Chevelle "Real" SS396 VIN 138 - Restored - Granada Gold w/Black Vinyl Top & Interior - 4 Speed - Buckets

I am selling this car for my friend Dianne who is 71 years of age, I'm 75(see photo). Her deceased husband Richard had this Chevelle restored in Kingman Arizona about 10 years ago and it has been driven less than 2000 miles since then. It has only been driven to car shows and has always been garaged kept under a cover. It has never been raced, hot rodded, or abused in any way and has always been well maintained, it was built for show not go. Dianne moved to Denton Texas 6 years ago to be closer to her son and his family and had the car shipped here and we have driven it to several DFW car shows where it has won several first and second place awards. Dianne doesn't like to drive it so I have driven it, stored it, and helped her maintain it but now she no longer wants to attend car shows so she wants to sell it because her sons would rather she have the money than keep it themselves. Even though I don't own it I have a good idea about it's condition and history and I will share that with you in the most detailed and honest way I can.

* Let's get the negative stuff out of the way first, it has a totally rebuilt but non-numbers matching 396 engine. It has had an exterior color change from the original factory Bolero Red to Granada Gold and the black vinyl top was added at the time of restoration because Richard had a gold one back in the day when he was younger.

*It was built in Atlanta Georgia at the GM assembly plant in 1967 and sold to the first owner in Texas and it remained there until it was purchased by Joshua Classics in Baltimore Maryland in the late 1990's. Richard bought it on ebay in 2000 and shipped it to Kingman Arizona. It was in excellent condition when Richard bought it with no body damage, exterior rust, or signs of having ever been in an accident as it is now. I have included a photo of a paper copy of the car when it was Bolero Red and listed on ebay and I have others if you would like to see them.

* Factory equipment - It was born Bolero Red SS396 with 325hp, Muncie wide ratio 4 speed transmission, 12 bolt 307 ratio posi-traction rear differential, factory air conditioning, black interior and bucket seats with clock mounted console, power steering, power assisted front disc brakes, and no vinyl top or seat belts.

* Complete Body-on Restoration - You will be provided with a large folder containing the receipts for labor, parts, and materials that were used to complete the restoration as well as receipts for labor and parts that have been completed since the restoration. The majority of the restoration was done by Dunton & Dunton Dream Machines in Kingman Arizona but Richard did do some of the mechanical labor himself but since he is now deceased I can't determine exactly what he did, only that it was well done as evidenced by the way it looks, runs, and performs today. The engine, transmission, and rear differential were rebuilt by other shops as shown. There are just too many parts and labor to list it all but I will list all the major parts and labor as verified by the receipts.

1. Body and paint - Jim at Dunton & Dunton Dream Machines told me that the man that had done the body and paint had since retired but he called him to verify what body work had been done and he said that the inside floor panel was replaced and that no other body work was required other than preparing it for paint. Here is a list of new parts that were installed after the new paint was applied: Black vinyl roof, body stripe decals, all emblems, 4 wheel moldings, both mirrors, and front bumper.

2. Suspension -

Heidt's RC-250 rear 4 link complete kit and shocks

Totally rebuilt power front disc brake kit, rear band brakes, hoses, and master cylinder

Front coil springs #008904

Power steering pump and belts

Front suspension and steering rebuilt with alignment

3. Interior -

Headliner, carpet with under carpet sound proofin, sun visors, mirror, and emblems

Console with clock, wood grain steering wheel, and Custom Autosound cassette radio with CD input.

2 Kenwood 6" x 9" rear speakers and 2 Sony 5" door panel mounted speakers

Gauge cluster conversion kit BF442, speedometer C553, and 6000 Redline dash tachometer BL06760

Note - The front and rear vinyl seat upholstery was in excellent condition and appears to be original so it was not replaced.

4. 396 cu. in. Engine - It was rebuilt and balanced by J.D. Machine shop in Lake Havasu Arizona and produces 446hp @5600rpm and 462hp @5600rpm. This is a list of the major parts that were installed:

* Bored to 406 cu. in., Polished crankshaft, Diamond pistons, Eagle Rods, True Roller timing set, HR284 cam & lifters, Ex valve springs, and chrome valve covers

* Hooker Competition headers HK-33, Flowmaster 40 Series mufflers, and 3" exhaust pipes

* MSD distributor cap and electronic ignition, spark plug wires and plugs

* Holley 750cfm carburetor HLY-0-4779C with choke HLY-45-224

* New starter, alternator, AC compressor, radiator, fuel and water pump, belts and hose, flywheel, pressure plate, and throw-out bearing were also installed

Muncie 4 speed Transmission - It was rebuilt by Kermit's Certified Transmissions in Kingman Arizona who converted it from a M21 wide ratio to a M22 close ratio with all new gears with these ratios 2:20/1.64/1.28/1.00 which are slightly lower than the stock M21 gears

6. Rear Differential - It was rebuilt by Automatic Transmission Rebuilders in Kingman Arizona who installed lower ratio 3:42 gears and a complete rebuild kit with axle bearings, seals, gaskets, and fluid.

* The following is a list of parts and labor that have been installed since the restoration was completed and the labor was done by J & M Automotive in Denton Texas unless otherwise noted:

3/26/2018 - Replaced power steering pump, pulley and heater control valve and cable

11/21/2019 - Installed new Vintage Air AC condenser and installation kit

9/9/2019 - Rear differential gear replacement - To make the car easier to drive, shift, and to get better fuel mileage the 3:42 gears were replaced with higher ratio 3:08 Yukon YG GM12P-308 gears and rebuilt with new axle bearings, seals, and gaskets by the company shown below. The 3:42 ratio gears will be included as part of the sale of the vehicle.

Summation - This beautiful Chevelle SS396 is in excellent condition with flawless body, paint, chrome, and it starts, runs, and drives great! There are no signs of body scratches, dents, or fading. After warming it starts on the first turn of the key, it shifts, steers, brakes, and runs like new. It has ice cold air conditioning, front seat belts, and Firestone F60-15 Wide Oval tires with 90% tread life remaining and no signs of cracks or damage. It doesn't use oil between oil changes and there are no oil or fluid leaks anywhere. All of the gauges, instruments, and switches work properly as they should except the clock and radio don't work. The interior is in excellent condition except the drivers seat springs are starting to weaken on the bottom from use but there are no holes, scratches, stains, or other damage or wear to the upholstery. The Flowmaster exhaust sounds great with a nice cam induced lope and rumble while idling and a smooth sound of power while driving but not so much that it bothers you while having a conversation or listening to music with the windows up. It has a Sunforger gold cloth/canvas car cover, Battery Tender(installed), 4 Chevelle floor mats, GM Chevelle shop manual, and aftermarket owners manual included with the sale.
