Description

1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS

Despite being in production for just 13 years less time than the Cadillac CTS nameplate the Chevrolet Chevelle has been heralded as one of the best, most accomplished vehicles ever to don the bowtie. While late-model Chevelle's are best left forgotten (like most vehicles produced in the mid-seventies), models like the 1970 Chevelle SS 396 are bound to get any red-blooded enthusiast weak at the knees. Due to its place in the canon of GM, much of the history of the Chevelle is an open book. However, one interesting fact is it was created as an intended successor to the widely popular Tri-Five (1955-57) and the designers saw it as a spiritual successor to the Bel Air 210. Why? It shared the same 110-inch wheelbase, and, like the Bel Air, buyers could choose from a crazy number of body styles and variants.

With big presence in the Classic Auto Mall-way, this completely preserved, and lightly restored car sits awaiting its opportunity to make the next enthusiast weak in the knees and paint a perma-smile on their face. As advertising states, "In 10 seconds your resistance will self-destruct". You will fall in love with that 1970's Mist Green, dark painted on wide stripes, dark vinyl top, all that SS badging, and the 396ci mill. It does not get any better than this.

Exterior
Nice Mist Green drapes this car's steel panels which mind their gaps very nicely. On the rockers we can note some minor rust bubbling under the paint. Black painted stripes race from front to back and are only broken up by the dark green vinyl top, which is pristine. On the hood the stripes have a few minor rust bubbles but are definitely painted on. Dual headlights, along with a dual stacked horizontal chrome rimmed grille has an SS badge emblazoned in chrome and white in the center. A lower mirror like bumper, and the dual rear cowled hood, shows well for this 1970 masterpiece. A shout out to the rear bumper with the inset taillights within an inset into the body bumper on the rear of the car, all shiny and new as well. Chrome trimmings and badging is all nicely preserved with mirror-like finishes. 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels are all around and wrapped by raised white lettered Goodrich Radial T/A's on all 4 corners.

Interior
You'll be seeing dark green on this interior with just fabulous dark green matching door panels nearly showroom, wonderful split bench up front, and a solid rear bench. The original dash is lighter green padded vinyl, and has black inserts which house the rounded instruments, buttons, and surrounding vitals. This car has a digital AM/FM radio installed within that faux black leatherette textured panel, and the floors are flooded in nice clean unfaded green carpet. Seen in the center of the hump is a chromed white ball topped Hurst shifter. Aftermarket white faced Auto Meter gauges are attached as a tachometer to the steering column, and a duo of smaller oil and water gauges hang below the digital radio in the dash. As for the headliner...you guessed it...more pristine green. Just really well done and preserved inside and a beautiful combo with the Mist Green exterior.

Drivetrain
An awesome blinged out orange blocked 396ci V8 graces a very clean and restored engine bay. This engine consigner states is numbers matching, and we would encourage to check the stamping on the block. Chromed valve covers, sandblasted headers, and a chromed air cleaner cover and shiny polished intake manifold add to the mechanical jewelry, and it just goes on and on. A single 4-barrel Holley carb is atop, and a consignor stated numbers matching Muncie M20 4-speed transmission is on back. A 12 bolt 3.31 posi rear is on back.

Undercarriage
Clean and rust free nearly as close to showroom as you can get, we have independent coil springs up front, and 4 link with coil springs on the rear. Power disc brakes upfront, and power drums on the rear, and a a Flowmaster exhaust is seen. Suspension looks like almost new, as does the floor pans, and frame. Shiny black for your eye's enjoyment on the underside.

Drive-Ability
As usual with these early 1970's Chevrolet muscle cars my decoder and editor clamor to drive these, so we flipped a coin and it landed on its side, so we both drove it! (one of the many bennies working at CAM). Anyway, she fired right up with a roar, and we were speeding our way to the test track. Here we found this car to be in ship shape mechanically, running smoothly, accelerating with no end, and cornering like a big lumbering muscle car form 1970. But it was a very enjoyable ride, summing up as "Green means GO!"

Restoration and good maintenance as well as a temp controlled garage is a wonderful thing especially when it shows to this level, and this one will not let you down. Wonderful Mist Green paint, Magnum 500 wheels, raised letter whites, a clean and pristine dark green vinyl top, 396ci engine, and a mean green interior like the original, all the boxes are checked and the i's are dotted as well as t's crossed on this one. So, come and get it, it will slide out of here very fast, just like it handled our test track.
