1969 Camaro Convertible Rally Sport X-11 4 speed
Description
You are viewing a 1969 Camaro Convertible Rally Sport. This car is a very straight, clean and solid car. I believe I am the 4th owner. Original floor pans, and trunk pan with no patches. One small pin hole in the trunk near the center documented by pictures. As the pictures show, this car's black laquer paint job glows despite the fact it is nearly 36 years old. The car was restored in 1980 and has not been touched as far as body work or paint since then. One small spot of rust in the bottom of the drivers door cavity exists, as does a hole about 1 inch across in the bottom of the inner rear fender well (pictured). I have done extensive work and paid premiums to bring this car back to the state it was in when it left the assembly line in April of 1969. This is an original RS, V8 car that was born as Rally Green/Black top. Now a triple black beauty. The vin proves the V8. The RS is proven by the existence of the red-line GM vacuum tubes, proper light switch and wiper body. The vacuum system does not operate the light covers, but I left all the tubing under the dash in order to substantiate the RS model. The vacuum canisters were removed prior to my obtaining the car. This car sits fantastic on 255/60/15s on the rear, and 217/70/15s on the front. BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires have very little mileage on them. 15x7 Rally Wheel up front, and 15x8 Rally Wheels in the rear. All are restored with the proper Argent Silver paint. This is a center console car, with standard black interior. Drivers seat has some tearing around the hinge area, passenger and rear seats are very good. Comfort grip steering wheel. Horn does not work.
Selling because I don't have the time to enjoy the car and it just sits in the garage. Could use the garage space more than the car at this point.
What I have done:
No body work at all.
Had the 12 bolt posi rear rebuilt with new axles, gears and clutches with the original 355 gear ratio.
Had a well known machine shop build an engine that is close to what would have come in the car at the time of the build, but with a cam and a few more horses. Engine block 3932388 with date code C 26 9. Cast iron intake manifold 3927184 with date code C4 9. Exhaust manifolds with high temp powder coating 3942523. Quadrajet was rebuilt professionally to 1 level below "show" quality and carries the proper date code for the car as well. The engine is 340-350 hp and has under 2000 miles on it.
New clutch, nothing fancy or racey. Just a solid system.
New Pypes stainless exhaust, dual muffler with exhausts terminating behind the rear wheels, facing downward.
Transmission is an M20 that came out of another Camaro approximately 7000 vin numbers from this car. This car was originally a TH350 car, but was a 4 speed when I bought it, but not the correct model Muncie. Now it is correct.
Completely restored the front subframe assembly and detailed the engine bay. Installed GM front disk brakes from a 1970 Nova SS. New disks and pads. All new steering joints, power steering hoses and torsion bar ends. New subframe bushings. New ball joints. As the picture shows, the subframe was detailed with semi-gloss black and looks as good today as it did when installed.
The 1980 restoration involved the removal of all trim and tags except the tailpan (which is an SS tag, but the car is not an SS originally). I purchased and installed GM NOS trim that totaled over $1700. Those parts were the rocker spears, wheel lip mouldings, shark gills for the quarter panels and rear bumper guards. All things that an RS with X-11 option would have included. I have tags from the packaging for most all of these items.
New 5k tachometer installed, and center fuel gauge installed. Original speedo. Old center clock and right side fuel gauge in boxes to go with the car.
AM radio installed but not wired. There for show only and it looks fabulous. There is a Sun Gauge cluster as well, located under the dash.
The good:
This car is straight and solid, and shows real nice from 10 feet. The engine/exhaust/clutch are in top mechanical condition and detailed nicely. This engine bay draws attention for its simplicity and quality of assembly and detailing. It drives great and tracks well. No chasing it going down the road. Though the paint is old, it is ot hiding anything from you as the buyer. A fresh paint job could be hiding anything. There are no secrets hiding under a 36 year old paint job. I would have eventually painted the car its' original Rally Green, but the black shined so well and I never worried about someone touching the car. I didn't want a trailer queen.
The not so good:
Items already mentioned- paint imperfections, dings, rust, chips and the tear in the drivers seat at the hinge. Radiator is either original or stock style. The car runs about 180-190 at 40 mph, and will hit 220 in traffic. Not sure that this is a problem or not. Maybe a radiator flush or an aluminum radiaor is warranted. The Muncie trans shifts fine up and down in 1 and 2. Up to 3rd is a little finicky, and up to 4th is more finicky. Trying to downshift to 3rd is not happening. I have seen the gears in the trans and they were fine. Syncros are what I was told may need to be replaced. It was not bad enough for me to tear out the trans, but I had it on the to-do list.
