Description

This 1969 Chevelle SS is bound to attract a lot of potential suitors thanks to its awesome combination of great colors, numbers-matching big block and 3-speed transmission, and the kind of street presence that only black cars can provide.Brilliantly refinished in glossy Tuxedo Black, this SS certainly looks the part of one of the era's most potent street cars. The body and paint were restored a few years ago, and it's clear that someone took exceptional care of the car ever since. Sure, it's been driven, because no man can resist the siren song of a big block in a Chevelle, but it has also been carefully washed and waxed, leaving a beautiful, smooth finish. There were are no deviations from stock, which means the original flat hood remains instead of a ubiquitous cowl induction piece and nobody felt the need to paint extra stripes on it. Shiny chrome bumpers, bright stainless window trim, and the proper SS badges all add to the very authentic look. In fact, this car is so straight and well-finished that it isn't until you see it in person that you get a full appreciation for how nice it truly is. If you like to walk softly and carry a big stick, this is the car for you.Inside it's the same story. The black bench seats have been recovered, and show very little wear. And yes, numbers fans, this is a code 755 interior, which means the front bench seat is original equipment. Everybody knows you mean business when you drive a big block car with bench seats and a 3-speed on the floor. Factory power steering, and power brakes make this Chevelle feel more like a luxury car, but cracking the throttle erases any thoughts of leisurely acceleration and mushy suspensions. The gauges are probably nicely preserved original and the original AM radio remains in the center of the dash, so they obviously had their priorities in order. The factory steering wheel is a correct SS unit now wrapped in black leather and the trunk is finished with spatter paint and what might be the original mat.The engine is the original, numbers-matching 396 cubic inch V8 that has been nicely dressed in a proper coat of Chevy Orange, so it looks great against the black bodywork. Chrome valve covers and a bright chrome air cleaner were standard issue on big block SS models in 1969, and an open-element air cleaner helps it breathe a little better. Someone clearly decided to keep things low-key under the hood, because things like the power brake booster and master cylinder were painted satin black to help them blend in. It starts with a nasty snarl and idles well, although there's a bit of a lope so you know there's some horsepower on tap. That's also the original 3-speed transmission sending twist to a 12-bolt rear end, which is also original to the car and wearing its factory ID tag. The exhaust uses glasspack-style mufflers for a fantastic big block sound, and while it's quite clean underneath, it's not detailed for show. The stance is exactly right, sitting on 14-inch SS wheels and 215/60/14 BFGoodrich T/A radials.Documented with the original build sheet, this '69 Chevelle SS396 is one of those rare opportunities to own a car with no stories and enough originality to make it an A-list collectable.
