Description

This 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu convertible is one of those cars that's simply an all-around winner. It's not trying too hard with fake SS emblems, it's got a handsome color combination, and with V8 power under the hood, it's no slouch around town. A pretty V8 convertible for a reasonable price? Where do I sign up?It's not flashy, but it's attractive in its own way. The light yellow paint on the car is not quite Gobi Beige and not quite Daytona Yellow, but it's quite pleasing and certainly looks period-correct on the handsome A-body. It was refinished not that long ago and looks great today, offering a bright shine and good prep underneath that makes it really stand out in a crowd. Sure, red or black would work, but this one stands out for being different and we love the choice. The doors open and close easily, the big quarters still have that subtle crease running through them, and gaps are decent all around, giving it an honest look. Badging is minimal on the Malibu, leaving the flanks clean and smooth, accentuated by bright chrome bumpers and polished wheel arch moldings. The original grille is up front, the flat hood is a refreshing change from all the cowl induction units we see, and we have to admit that the car's simple look is really starting to grow on us.A black bench seat interior is a great complement to the light yellow paint, and it sure looks like all the soft parts inside are new. That's a reproduction seat cover on the front seat but the rear seat might just be original. The door panels are also replacement pieces that replicate the original look, and again, there's something to be said for it not being an SS. It just looks clean. The instrument panel and gauges are probably original and you get only the basics in this Malibu: speed and fuel level. However, the radio has been upgraded to a Sony AM/FM/cassette head unit and the dash pad is in great shape. The carpets feature correct heel pads for the driver and the right weave, so they look right and it's fitted with a recent black vinyl convertible top with a glass rear window, a rare find in this price class. There's also a big trunk with enough space for all your gear on a weekend getaway. The bright orange 350 cubic inch V8 looks very fresh and runs superbly. Pretty much stock, it's smooth, torquey, and reliable, just the way you want your Chevy to behave, and the brightly painted engine looks great in the all-black engine bay. A correct air cleaner lives up top and it's equipped with power steering and power front disc brakes, so driving is a snap. We might think about replacing that generic hose with a more appropriate reproduction piece, but otherwise there's very little to fault here. The TH350 3-speed automatic transmission is an unobtrusive dance partner and with highway gears in the 10-bolt rear end, it's a first-class cruiser. Stock cast iron exhaust manifolds feed a brand new Flowmaster exhaust system and you'll be pleased by the condition of the undercarriage. The most notable modification are those gorgeous 17-inch Torque Thrust wheels, which work perfectly on this car and carry 245/45/17 performance radials.A very pretty car with plenty of performance, room for the whole family, and a top that goes down.
