BODYWORK/TRIM
Thanks to a $160K rotisserie reboot that was completed by Raleigh, North Carolina's B-Mac's Auto Restoration, this Chevelle realized its owner's ultimate goal of wrapping timeless Chevrolet style around 21st century comfort and brutal performance. Naturally, that owner, a retired advanced aircraft design engineer, conducted a great deal of research and planning to perfect the details and workmanship of what became an amazing, no-expense-spared classic. The foundation for that flash is a laser-straight body that was stripped bare, wet-sanded between sprays and wet-sanded for well over 100 hours after the paint process was complete. Speaking of sprays, this Chevy wears exactly 14 applications of PPG Vibrance 2-stage, which manifests as four coats of Gold Leaf, four coats of O-So-Sexy Red, double-layered Titanium Silver Super Sport stripes and four coats of clear. Depending on the sun, that pigment tends to alternate between an explosion of dark red and a phenomenon of golden hot red. And today, roughly 1000 miles out of the restoration shop, the car has claimed quite a few Best of Show awards throughout the Carolinas.
Many enthusiasts view early '70s Chevelles as the pinnacle of both muscle car and classic Chevy design. At the front of this coupe, a polished bumper frames a familiar Super Sport grille, which rides between modern Hella headlights. Above that bumper, a pinned cowl induction hood anchors smoked glass between polished trim, polished drip rails and polished mirrors. Below those mirrors, factory door handles, clean marker lamps and custom "SS572" emblems leave the car's monochromatic profile free of any frivolous distractions. And at the back of that profile, a second polished bumper hangs silver-trimmed taillights between polished exhaust tips and a stylish Chevelle trunk script.
ENGINE
Gaze in to the car's glossy engine bay and you'll find 572 cubic inches of Chevrolet Performance big block that twists stout 9.6 to 1 compression into 620 horsepower and a massive 650 lb./ft. of torque! At the top of that monster mill, an 850cfm Holley double pumper mixes wind supplied by a billet air cleaner with fuel that's piped through a coated Edelbrock pump, a coated regulator, a small Auto Gage pressure gauge and braided stainless lines. That air/fuel mixture floods a tall GM single-plane intake on the way to aluminum, rectangular-port cylinder heads, which hang polished and color-keyed valve covers between stainless valves, roller rocker arms, a polished Chevrolet cap and a polished Chevrolet breather. At the back of that intake, an MSD Pro-Billet distributor sequences spark between MSD electronic ignition and quality MSD plug wires. Those wires fire a forged rotating assembly, which plants a 4340 crank beneath shot peened 4340 H-beams and lightweight aluminum pistons. Between those pistons, an aggressive roller cam feeds coated Hooker Competition headers. At the front of those tubes, polished Billet Specialties Tru Trac components spin an Edelbrock water pump between a polished Powermaster alternator and a polished AC compressor. In front of those ancillaries, a large Be Cool radiator circulates fluid around two SPAL puller fans. Everything communicates well thanks to proven American Autowire wiring. And items like trick dipsticks, billet fluid reservoirs, hidden AC lines and a smoothed firewall add a high level of visual detail.
DRVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
Beneath this Chevy, a clean undercarriage literally defines the phase "acute attention to detail". Rock-solid floorpans, given the same intense treatment of PPG as the car's wet-looking body panels, set the perfect backdrop for a roster of high quality parts. Behind the impressive big block, a tough SPEC Super Twin clutch kicks a proven Tremec T56 6-speed, which spins a custom driveshaft. That line twists torque to a 9-inch Moser axle that's finished with a posi-traction differential and fancy TA inspection cover. That excellent drivetrain is framed by a heavily upgraded suspension that, thanks to Air Ride Technologies' Lev 7500 Level Pro Suspension Package, can be preset for high, medium or low via hand-tapped ride height sensors. When the road starts to twist, the aforementioned Flaming River power steering utilizes a 12:1 gearbox to maximize driver input. At the corners, big Wilwood calipers squeeze four drilled and slotted rotors with the help of a Baer proportioning valve and Hydratech hydroboost hydraulics. Spent gases race from the aforementioned headers in to 3-inch, Mandrel-bent pipes, which hang an H-shaped crossover in front of rowdy Flowmaster mufflers. And rubber scars the pavement thanks to polished Billet Specialties wheels, which turn 245/40ZR18 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs in front of 275/35ZR20 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs.
INTERIOR
Sporting a fully custom interior, this Chevelle is both inviting and unique. Electric bucket seats, borrowed from a 2006 Pontiac GTO, wear incredible hides of Symphony Ultra Armadillo leather. In front of those thrones, a leather-topped dash founds a modern Pioneer head unit and Vintage Air climate control next to an assortment of custom gauges that were created by RedLine Gauge Works of Santa Clarita, California. Below that dash, a custom console anchors a custom Hurst shifter behind a readout for the car's Air Ride Technologies suspension. Beneath that island, Porsche Silver Knit Cork tight-weave carpet floats piped floor mats between billet foot pedals, custom foot well lighting and a full complement of B-Quiet insulation. At the sides of that carpet, stock-appearing door panels tuck custom leather pleats between custom billet trim, correct chrome handles and smooth power windows. Above those panels, a tight Symphony Ultra Armadillo headliner splits the difference between leather-trimmed A-pillars, a custom package tray and a modern mirror that's complete with map lights. In front of the driver, a custom Nardi steering wheel laps an adjustable Flaming River column. Behind the passengers, a custom-upholstered trunk plants an LED-lit, CNC-embossed "SS" back panel in more Symphony Ultra Armadillo leather and more Porsche Silver Knit Cork carpeting. And the aforementioned Pioneer head unit feeds a premium sound system that mixes a custom-built Sound Box and 5-channel digital amp with Hybrid Audio Mirus speakers with two 8-inch subwoofers.
