Named the KING OF THE HILL by Chevrolet for its legendary performance, the ZR-1 comes with an all-aluminum, four-cam, 32-valve LT5 V8, factory rated at 375 hp and 370 lb.-ft of torque. The LT5 is an engineering masterpiece designed by Lotus and hand-built to exacting tolerances by Mercury Marine with specific parts contracted through machine shops across America; (the forged crankshaft however was made in England). At the time the ZR-1 blew away the exotics from Europe running from zero to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds and registered a top speed at Texas Motor Speedway during the endurance test of 196 mph. The LT5 was also incredibly reliable. The ZR-1 set the 24 hour Endurance World Record @ 175.9 mph for 4,221 miles. Following 24 hours the two drivers weren't tired and attempted to blow up the motor running an additional 6 hours which they later gave up after reaching 5,000 punishing miles. Although the LT5 engine was over a $30,000 option, GM lost money on the project and only built 6,939 vehicles. The engine is a true credit to American engineering.
