Description

First let me say that this is not my car. I am auctioning this 1968 Chrysler Newport Custom for a friend who doesn’t do eBay. The car is located in Rockland, Maine. If you would like or need more information please send me an email or contact Tony directly at 207-691-4596 and we will do our best to answer your questions.

As to myself, I am a (67) year old kid that loves muscle cars. For my work, I am retired from managing a Correctional Facility here in Maine and had worked for the Maine Department of Corrections for (40) years. I am also a respected member of my community. I mention this only because of the value of this car and so that prospective buyers will have some idea as to who they are dealing with. Also, please check out my eBay feedback that is 100% after (1,178) transactions. Many of my transactions have been muscle cars, which I have sold to individuals all over the country as well as Canada, England, France, Switzerland, Australia and the Netherlands. My reputation for honesty is well known amongst muscle car lovers.

How about a little history on the classic 1968 Chrysler Newport Custom.

The 1968 Newport received only a minor facelift from its 1967 counterpart including new grilles and taillights. All body styles were carried over on both the base Newport and Newport Custom lines. The standard 383cuin (6.3L) two-barrelV8received a 20hp (15kW; 20PS) increase to 290hp (216kW; 294PS), while the four-barrel 383cuin (6.3L) rating went from 325hp (242kW; 330PS) to 330hp (246kW; 335PS), while the 440cuin (7.2L) TNT was unchanged at 375hp (280kW; 380PS).

A mid-year offering on the Newport hardtop coupe and convertible was the Sportsgrain option similar to thesimulated woodgrainexterior bodyside trim on the Town and Country station wagons of this period. The Sportsgrain Newport was intended to bring back the spirit of the late 1940s Town and Country convertibles but amounted to little more than a regular Newport as there were no other modifications and interior trims were the same as standard Newports. Production of the 1968 Sportsgrain Newports amounted to 965 hardtops and 175 convertibles. The Sportsgrain option returned for the redesigned 1969 Newport two-door hardtop and convertible; however, orders for the option were low that Chrysler did not release their production totals.

Mercury tried a similar approach to the Sportsgrain Newport in 1968 by offering woodgrain "Yacht Deck Paneling" as an option on itsPark Lanecoupes and convertibles, which also did not experience significant consumer demand.

Production of the C-body Newport ended in 1978, along with theChrysler New Yorker. RelatedDodgeandPlymouthC-body cars, as well as C-body Chrysler Town & Country station wagons had all been dropped the previous year. The 1978 Newport offered theAmericancar industry's last true two-door and four-doorhardtops.

I’ll be perfectly honest with you and tell you right up front that this classic 1968 Chrysler Newport Custom is in no way perfect. Rather I would consider the car to be a driver that could be driven now. You will see a photo of the door data tag to show what this car came with from the factory. I will show lots of photos including a video and tell you as much as I can about the condition of this 1968 Chrysler Newport Custom. However, I will leave it to you to contact me or the owner prior to the auction close if you need additional information or photos. We will do my best to respond quickly and honestly. You will not need to spend an arm and a leg to own this 1968 Chrysler Newport Custom.

Mileage exempt.

Check out the video here. Sorry about the delay in the video when I was trying to find the right key.

Interior

The interior is good with the exception of the rips in the front seats. The headliner is OK with one very small hole over the passenger’s side. Good door panels and package tray. Good dash with working instruments. I think the radio and FM converter works. Good carpet. Solid floors. The horn does not work.

Exterior

·Driver quality new paint;

·Passenger’s side door lock needs to be installed;

·Bright work and chrome is good;

·Bumpers are driver quality;

·Good glass;

·As to body panels, they look to be original;

·Cragar SS rims are good and tires are good.

Trunk:

The trunk looks good with no spare but does have the jack assembly.

Undercarriage: The undercarriage is in good condition. The exhaust is OK. Brakes are good.

Engine Compartment

The engine compartment is good with what looks to be all original with the exception of the new alternator that was just installed. Not sure about the radiator. The 383ci engine starts fine and runs good.

Transmission: The automatic transmission shifts up and down the gears as it should.

Electrical: Lights, blinkers (Except Passenger’s side blinker. May be just a bulb.), wipers and heater are functional. Horn does not work and we think the radio does work.

ID Photos: Important photos can be seen here.
