Description

The 1967 Imperials were their own stand-alone make.. they were "Imperial, by Chrysler", and not a "Chrysler Imperial". New for '67 was unit construction body, all new sheet metal and interiors, and crisp elegant styling. The 350hp 440 V-8 engine was introduced just the previous year. Imperials for 1967 feature distinctive front fender lamps that are embossed with the Imperial Eagle. The front grille features a color-keyed insert that matches the paint. At the rear, large tail lamps are separated only by the distinctive Imperial Eagle, set in a circular chrome frame. In between, the lines are very clean and uncluttered, unlike many of the Imperial's competitors. Standard rear fender skirts give the Imperial a sophisticated look.
Inside, the elegant instrument panel features real walnut—as do the doors. To keep the panel tidy, a door closes to conceal the radio controls. Another door hides the ash tray. Little details are designed to surprise, and make the Imperial luxurious. A passenger assist grip is concealed on the underside of the dash pad. Chrysler said it best, and said it first: this is what a luxury car was always meant to be.
Here is your opportunity to own a very rare 1967 Chrysler Imperial Convertible. There were just 577 Imperial Convertibles made in 1967, and very few remain today. This particular car was a project that I bought several years ago, but I simply have not been able to give it the attention that it deserves. It requires a complete cosmetic restoration and has several rusty areas that need attending to. It is definitely a significant project. The Spice Gold paint lost its shine many years ago and the leather interior has a very nice patina. There are black cloth inserts in the seats that have become brittle with age and have torn. This car, like most Imperials, came loaded with options: 6-way Power Seats, a Reclining Passenger Seat, Power Windows including power Vent Windows, Front Disc Brakes (with New Calipers), a Tilt and Telescoping steering wheel, "Auto-Pilot" Cruise Control, and Air Conditioning. The Cruise Control and Air Conditioning are complete and intact, but I have never attempted to get them working. The drivers window motor has locked up in the up position, but a new window motor is included in the sale. The drivers side, rear window is slow and needs a helping hand to go up and down. Most it this is just from sitting over the Winter. The power top works fine, but could probably use a flush and fill of the fluid in its hydraulics. The Claro Walnut Veneer on the dash is sun-faded. New Claro Walnut Veneer is usually available here on eBay.
The Chrysler 440 is known to be bullet-proof, as is the automatic transmission. I replaced the carburetor and it does not have a choke hooked up to it, so starting the car usually requires a squirt of fuel into the carb and then a simple turn of the key. It runs beautifully once started. I replaced the starter last fall. The most significant issue with the car is rust. It has rust along the lower edge of the car from the front wheel wells, along the rocker panels, and in the rear fenders right back to the rear bumper. The floors are mostly solid, but there is a small rust hole just in front of the rear passenger seat, about where the passengers heal would rest, and it is about 6 inches by 2 inches in size. The torque boxes have rusted out and need to be replaced (although the rear suspension glides along just fine). I had always intended to pick up a 67 hardtop parts car as a donor, but other projects always seemed to take priority. It's still a bargain for the opening bid of this 'No Reserve' Auction. I've been told to reduce my fleet and clear out some toys, so this Imperial must go.
This smooth riding land yacht deserves better than I have been able to give. Happy Bidding!
