Description

1970 Datsun 240z- HLS30061806/70 Production Date, L26, 907 Racing Green (currently white)
This is one of the first few thousand vehicles delivered in the USA. Produced in July of 1970, this car was originally delivered in a beautiful 907 Racing Green (still seen on the inside of the doors) with black interior.
At some point the original 2.4L was replaced with the larger 2.6 L-Series motor, but retains early desirable round-top SU carburetors (as opposed to the dreaded flat-tops that came on 260z's). Retains the original smog equipment.
Clear title, currently registered with California blue license plates (would be ideal for a California home to enjoy the 6-digit blue plates on a very worth-while restoration). I went through the trouble of re-assigning this car to original 1970 plates and it would be a shame for the car to not sport them for originality-sake. Personally, I have run out of time for this beautiful project and other cars are taking precedence in my garage.
Someone who loves these cars needs to resurrect this early Datsun 240z! Perfect restoration for the coming Spring and Summer months/Father-Son project. As we all know, Datsun's are rising in value with the rest of the classic car market and 1970-examples of the 240z are rare, especially an early VIN number.
Here is some information on the early 240z VINs from zhome.com written by Carl Beck:

"THE SERIES I 240Z's- Produced from Oct. of 1969 through Jan. of 1971. They are identified by the fresh air exhaust vents located on the rear hatch. (some of these cars were also produced in the first few weeks of Jan. 1971 during the transition period) They have plastic covers for tools and jack located behind the seats, steering wheels with indents, rather than holes.

The Series I 240Z'swere sold and titled as 1969, 1970 and 1971 Model Year Cars here in the U.S. and North American Markets. (as they complied with all U.S. Emissions and Safety standards in effect for those years. There was not much change in the standards for those years.)

Cars that arrived at the U.S. Ports after Sept. 1 1970, could legally be, and were, sold as 1971 Model Year Cars. (they could also have been, and were, legally sold as 1970 Model Year Cars! - however very few of them were, due to the price increase on the 1971 Model Year cars.)."

This particular early-production 1970 240z was saved early this year with the goal to get the vehicle up-and-running. After having not run since 2000, this vehicle has seen a number of recent upgrades and is running and driving currently and registered.
Since then a host of replacements/upgrades have occurred including the following:
New alternator beltNew positive battery cableRebuilt original Sumitomo calipers & fresh brake padsNew front rotorsNew rubber brake hosesRear brake shoes & hardware replacedBrake hard-lines cleared out with air compressorFront inner and outer wheel bearings replacedReplaced clutch slave cylinder & clutch hoseRebuilt original master vacuum by reputable shop, retaining label for originalityRe-cored OEM radiator for originality, fluids flushed and replacedNew mechanical fuel pumpGas tank has been coated, replacing ALL rear vent lines with OEM-style braided hose, and reinstalled with new rubber insulatorsNew fuel tank sending unitReplaced all fuel hose at gas tank, mechanical fuel pump, & SU carburetorsUpgraded to Nissan 280ZX electronic distributor (looks original, but no points to hassle with)New coil & new NGK spark plugs w/ NGK wires
Tell me more:
Sits on beautiful, vintage Western 14x6 period correct aluminum wheels.
Has original 4-speed transmission which shifts nicely.
Has rear deck lid with vents and vertical defrost glass.
No major rust in the space tire well or below the battery tray as is VERY common ~ metal integrity is good at both areas. No visible rust in the rockers, metal is solid.
The majority of the original interior is all in there, although it will need some love and attention: majority of the electronics are working from the testing that has been done. The speedometer and clock do not operate currently and there is no stereo equipment.
The dash does have an ABS dash-cap, so the condition of the original dash is unknown.
Heater core operation is unknown, although it does not leak coolant.
Car was installed with factory AC but the AC system has not been diagnosed besides that there is no belt running the motor.
The SU carburetors probably require rebuild: the gaskets are all original and have become hard and brittle in the last 45 years. (I would delete all of the smog equipment, but for originality-sake it's all there).
Brakes are still a bit soft and could use a few more bleedings.
So... What makes it a project?
- Both driver's side and passenger's side window regulators need adjustment/replacing. Original Nissan glass is intact on all windows (except maybe the front window).
- Passenger side floor pan looks to have been punctured by a lift at some point in the car's life. Overall, the bottom of the floors look to be in good condition (except for this tear); further assessments are difficult to make until the sound deadening is removed from the interior floor plans.
- Passenger side front frame rail does have some rust, as is typical with these early cars, and there is a crack in the tub just behind the driver's seat (see images).
-The car runs and drives but needs more work before I would consider it a completely road worthy car for longer trips. You probably will want to trailer this home.
Along with this car comes parts that were removed during maintenance, original yellow wheel chocks, spare wheel w/ tire.
The important, purchase-related information:
This car is almost 50 years old. It is a used car. It has not been restored except for the repaint at some point. I have done my best to point out the strengths and weaknesses honestly. It does not come with a warranty, roadside assistance, or a guarantee that it will get you home. Like any old car, it is a project and a serious commitment. My only hope is that you will enjoy figuring the car out and restoring/modifying it!
