The Datsun 240Z launched in 1970 was inspired by such exotic machinery as the Ferrari Daytona, but its affordability helped it establish the mid-priced GT concept into a highly profitable market. 260- and 280-series models followed, and in 1979, Datsun built on the luxury side of the equation with the 280ZX, its somewhat more angular features cloaking a brand-new platform offering more practical space. Drivelines were carried over and the car's outside dimensions were virtually identical, with the added plus of wind-tunnel-improved aerodynamics and all-new independent suspension borrowed from the upscale 810. While criticized by some as too soft, the 280ZX was exactly the right approach in an era when car manufacturers worldwide were adjusting to new government legislation and changing market demands, and through the magic of time examples such as this well-maintained, low-mileage final-year coupe are in high demand among aficionados.
Owned by a single family and driven just 16,000 miles since purchased new at Stuart Nissan/Datsun in Stuart, Florida, it was completed in July 1983 and delivered in Regatta Red with a Black and Grey interior fitted with air conditioning, cruise control, AM/FM/cassette stereo and power steering, brakes and windows. The car's matching-numbers 2.8L/145 HP inline-6 is mated to a Borg Warner T5 5-speed manual transmission found in many GM produced cars of the same era, a rarity from a time when the optional 3-speed automatic was a surprisingly popular choice. While T-Tops were all the rage in that day it is equally rare to find this vintage with a solid-roof configuration. This late-production 280ZX has been shown regularly over the years, accumulating no fewer than 25 first-place trophies
