BODYThe body design of the DMC-12 is a product of Giorgetto Giugaro of Ital Designand is panelled in brushed SS304stainless steel. Except for three cars plated in 24-carat gold, all DMC-12s left the factory uncovered by paint or clearcoat. The stainless steel panels are fixed to aglass-reinforced plastic(GRP, fiberglass)monocoqueunderbody. The underbody is affixed to a double-Y frame chassis, derived from the Lotus Espiritplatform. DOORSThe DMC-12 features gull-wing doors supported bycryogenicallypreset torsion bars and gas-chargedstruts.A popular misconception of the DMC-12's gull-wing doors is that they require far more side clearance to open relative to ordinary side-hinge doors, such as when parked in a parking lot. In fact, the opposite is true: the DMC-12 requires far less clearance than side-hinge doors, only 11 inches (28cm) clearance outside the line of the car, making opening and closing the doors in crowded spaces relatively easy. The DMC-12 doors feature small cutout windows, because full-sized windows would not be fully retractable within the short door panels. I've installed the aftermarket Wings-a-Loft system that allows the doors to be remotely opened via the key fob. See Youtube for videos of this system in action. ENGINEThe engine is a Peugeot-Renault-Volvo (PRV) 2.85 litreV6which was designed and built under special contract with the DMC Company. ThesePRV engineswere a development of the 2.7 litre V6 in theRenault 30, and were built in the PRV Factory inDouvrin, Northern France. The gearbox, also designed by PRV, was built at the Renault facility nearCaenin Normandy. The engines and gearboxes were shipped weekly by sea from the PRV Factories to the DMC Factory in Dunmurry, Northern Ireland. SUSPENSIONThe underbody andsuspensionof the DMC-12 are a four-wheelindependent suspension, coil springs, and telescopicshock absorbers. The front suspension usesdouble wishbones, while the rear is amulti-linksetup. The car is currently in the original factory spring / bumper height specification and has not been lowered. Steering israck and pinion (unpowered), with an overallsteering ratioof 14.9:1, giving 2.65 turns lock-to-lock and a 35-foot (11m) turning circle. It is fitted with the originalcast alloywheels, measuring 14 inches (360mm) in diameter by 6 inches (150mm) wide on the front and 15 inches (380mm) in diameter by 8 inches (200mm) wide on the rear. These are fitted with brand new Cooper tires. The DMC-12 features power-assisted disc brakeson all wheels, with 10-inch (250mm) rotors front and 10.5-inch (270mm) rear. STEREO SYSTEMThe car includes aJVC KD-AVX77 El KameleonDVD/CD/USB Head Unit with a 5.4" touch screen display, Bluetooth, Handsfree mic, USB, and backup camera installed in 2013. There are upgraded panasonic speakers, as well as a custom built Subwoofer Cabinet behind the seats with twin Alumapro Subs. The system is powered by a JL Audio 300/2 amp and a JL Audio 500/1 Amp located behind the sub cabinet. I've been extremely pleased with the power and sound quality of the audio system. MODIFICATIONSI've tried to keep the car as original as possible but have made a few minor modifications here and there. I replaced the factory headlight surrounds with stainless steel surrounds. The lower front grill has been replaced with a stainless steel grill from DMC Houston. The stereo system, as noted above, has been vastly improved. Most interior lights have been upgraded to LED. The original plastic shifter ball has been replaced with a stainless steel ball from DMC Houston. Lastly, I've added the "Wings-a-loft" system that allows the doors and bonnet to be opened remotely. Pressing the requisite buttons on the key fob will cause the gull wing doors to open - it's extremely impressive and fun, especially when you find a crowd of people gathered around the car in a parking lot. Fuel tank boot upgrade that prevents a known "won't start" type issue. Since I've owned the vehicle, I've put about $20,000 of fixes and or maintenance into it (I have receipts for almost everything), including engine seals, clutch, brake rotors, clutch master cylinder, door seals, windshield and more. KNOWN ISSUESOverall, the car is very clean and in very good shape. The body is nearly flawless, stainless steel is in excellent condition. Though I don't use this car as a daily driver, it could be one immediately. It drives and handles well and has proven to be generally pretty reliable if regularly maintained. However, as with any vehicle 35 years old (especially a 1st generation car built in the UK!), it does have it's quirks and minor issues.
Small Exhaust Leak
Power Antenna nolonger works (can be replaced)
Seat leatherisa bit worn:cracks in headrest, small hole near lumbar on driver's side
Binnacle has cracks from sun damage (extremely common issue - can be fixed)
Mystery Parasitic Battery Drain (will go flat after a week or two) - battery kill switch installed to compensate
Tiny paint imperfection on rear bumper
