Description

1940 De Soto Convertible as found and a perfect candidate for Restoration. Only 1085 of these '40 DeSoto Convertibles were made, making it a rather desirable Pre war rag top. While stored indoors in recent years, car obviously sat outside in the past, and shows usual old convertible deterioration. Exterior of body is fairly straight and reasonably solid, with exception of rear tail pan and bottom of deck lid, which have rust out. Doors line up nicely and open and shut good, but lower body, interior floors, and trunk pan are rusty. Floor sections from another 1940 Mopar parts car could probably be installed, or, as these floors are mostly flat, new floor fabrication should also be very do-able. Car is not 100% complete, but other than the special bolt-on wind wings and the left hand sun visor, most of the unique convertible components appear to be present. Folding top frame is straight and solid. Vacuum power top system is dis-connected but intact. Original seats and side panels have been removed, but are present. Door windows have nice stainless frames, and roll up and down. The stainless exterior body moldings are complete, with exception of the short 5 3/4in. long cowl molding for passenger side. One headlight bucket is missing, as is right taillight lens. No bumper guards are here, and car has mounting holes for a left hand spotlight, which is also not present. The flat head 6 cylinder engine is believed to be original, but is missing some parts, and is stuck. Car is equipped with a factory 3-speed overdrive transmission, but operating condition of trans is unknown. Frame is solid, car rolls nicely, steering works, but steering box is very tight. Car is probably missing a few other items not listed that I missed, but for a convertible of this age, most of the important, hard-to-get parts are here. What goes with car is shown(see all the pics) so look it over. This would obviously be an ambitious restoration project, but it should have high value potential when finished, and would certainly be worth the effort. The basic convertible body and convertible components are also shared with '40 Dodge, Chrysler, and Plymouth Convertibles, (and '41 Plymouth Convert), so this car might be just as useful as a parts car for an on-going '40 convertible restoration. Original serial number plate is intact, and car is being sold with bill of sale only, no title. A $500.00 non refundable PayPal deposit is required within 24 hours, and balance is to be paid within 7 days. Car should be picked up with in 30 days, unless other arrangements are made. Car is available for inspection here in New Hampshire almost anytime. NO RESERVE and car can possibly sell with just a phone call. 603-239-7200 or text 603-381-7444.
