1972 DeTomaso Pantera Early "Pre L" bumper local Texas 2 owner car showing 85,129 miles offered by Gas Monkey Garage with a Buy It Now or Best Offer!
The earlier "pre L", small chrome bumper cars are by far the most desirable and collectable of all the Pantera models with the exception of the few earliest "push button" door European cars. The later 1972 "L" cars featured larger black rubber bumpers that would remain on the Pantera throughout the run of US cars
Derived from the earlier designed Mangusta, the Pantera, also designed by Ghia, employed a steel monocoque chassis and starting in 1972, utilized the reliable Ford 351 Cleveland V8. With a 4 bolt main and the "Cobra Jet" cam, it delivered reliable performance that Americans demanded.
Originally imported by Ford and sold through Lincoln Mercury Dealers from 1971-1975 it was marketed and sold to performance enthusiasts until it became too expensive and not profitable for dealers (Ford priced the car at $9,995, below the Lincoln Town Car which was $9,999 as Ford wanted the Town Car to be the most expensive car it sold). Only about 5,500 were sold during this period with another 2,000 or so produced for various markets over the next 20 years in several iterations including some wide body cars in the later versions.
This extremely nicely preserved example has been in the Dallas area it's entire life with the 2nd owner possessing the car for nearly 30 years. They maintained & drove the car regularly and it shows in this well presented example with Factory A/C.
Exterior photos show an original car complete with proper Factory Alloy Wheels and chrome bumpers and trim present and showing well. The paint is in good condition having had a respray in what appears to be the original Factory color with some nicks & chips, mostly below the front bumper (see all 100+ pics).
Interior pics show a well sorted and original interior that has not been modified and is well preserved with clean, solid seats, carpets, dash & door panels. Even the steering wheel pad is solid and clean (these are often deteriorated by UV exposure & are difficult & expensive to source).
Engine compartment pics show the fairly original and un-modified 351 V8 with the addition of a High Volume K&N air filter. The transaxle is clean and included pics of the cross member reveal the solid & rust free condition.
Underside photos reveal a clean and solid chassis that hasn't been altered or modified (again. See all 100+ photos).
While this Pantera does run and drive very well, it will need to be completely inspected and serviced before any extended driving to ensure safety and reliability (due to our filming schedule we cannot perform any additional work on this car or build it for you). The winning bidder may have the option of coming to the shop to pick up the Pantera.
