Description

This is a great First Gen Cummins that I've had the privilege of owning for the past 3 years. The original owner (I'm the 2nd owner) has a local plumbing company and bought the truck from new in Jan. of '93 in Bosque Farms, NM. The injection pump went bad on him several years back so he sold it as a "tow it away" special. I towed it home at 178k (with my '92 First Gen) in early '14 and went about rebuilding the injection pump and starting the slow process of mechanically restoring the truck. My '92 went to a good friend and this '93 became my main project. I've poured a lot of work into it and I hate to see it go so I hope it finds a good home.
It's spent its whole life in central New Mexico which means it's rust free as we're a high-desert and no road-salt state. The truck has a squeaky-clean Carfax report in all respects and I have a clean NM title in hand. Just over 189k on the odometer at the moment.
It's a 2wd with the 5-speed Getrag transmission. It has the LE package so it has a limited slip Dana 70 3.54 rear-end, power windows, mirrors, locks, cruise control, and ABS rear brakes which all work. It has cold A/C and the heater works like a champ as well.
The Getrag transmission and the Dana rear end have tags on them that indicate they've been reman'd at some point in the truck's life. I have photos of those tags that I can provide upon request. The brake master cyl. and brake booster are also stamped "reman" so they work very well.
Maintenance, etc:In the ~11k miles that I've put on the truck in the last 3 years I've done the following:
Fixed the KDP (killer dowel pin), rebuilt the injection pump, replaced the lift pump, replaced the fuel filter, new water pump, thermostat, and upper/lower radiator hoses, plus a complete coolant flush, new driver's motor mount (the passenger is still great but I'll include a new one I have in the box), new valve cover gaskets, re-sealed the steering box, rebuilt the stock steering coupler and welded the pin, replaced the steering center link, re-sealed the vacuum pump, replaced the rear-main seal and oil pan gasket, new transmission mount, replaced the transmission oil with Redline (did a 1-quart overfill to keep the input bearing happy), replaced the diff fluid (conventional fluid) and re-sealed the cover, inspected/adjusted the rear drums and replaced the axle seals, replaced the rear tires, and replaced the fusible links with a fuse system (future owner, you're welcome!). Most work of this I did with Cummins parts or name-brand aftermarket when Cummins wasn't available (water pump/hoses are "Gates"). Plus some other odds and ends that I'll cover in the "Mods/Upgrades" portion. Mods/Upgrades:The truck was bone-stock when I got it. In the last ~11k miles I've done the following:
The injection pump has been tweaked and includes a 3200 rpm governor spring, and a Denny T. fuel pin, and the pump timing has been bumped (I advanced the gear a tooth so the pump doesn't need to be jammed against the cyl. head). I added 5x12 injector nozzles to the stock injector bodies (I pop-tested and set them to the appropriate opening pressures), I ditched the laggy stock turbo for a quick spooling HE351CW out of a 3rd gen truck and it has a spring wastegate that works great. I went with a DIY full 4" exhaust that has a straight through Donaldson muffler that flows well and is surprisingly quiet. I also went with a "BHAF" intake setup with a DIY heat-shield. The original fan and shroud were in bad shape when I got the truck so I did an electric fan setup. I also added a Greddy EGT gauge (from the ol' parts bin) and an Isspro boost gauge. This all has made for a fun and engine-safe power level that isn't overly smokey and is reasonable on the EGTs.
How Does It Drive?The truck brakes extremely well - it stops hard and with zero drama, and the ABS kicks on readily on slick roads. The steering is tight as can be. The suspension is great with no noise/clunks. There's somewhat of a front end vibration at certain highway speeds (smooths right out at 100!) that I attribute to the non-stock front wheels that aren't properly lug-centered. It could probably also use a front end alignment whenever the front tires get replaced (they have 5-7k left) which would be a good time to swap some stock wheels on (they're out there and are usually quite cheap). The power is great from low speed all the way up to 100.
Oh Yeah, and...The front speakers don't work, the high beams don't work (the lows are great), there's a fair amount of wind noise at highways speed (door/window gaskets were some of the next things I wanted to replace) and the fuel gauge seems to think that you're out of fuel when you've only run through about half of your actual tank.
