The original Testarossa was introduced in 1984 and was the first 12-cylinder Ferrari specifically designed for the U.S. market. The Testarossa was designed with attractive integrated bumpers, U.S.-friendly headlights, a user-friendly cockpit, more than adequate air conditioning and a then state-of-the-art engine-management system and catalytic converters, making it a supercar by the performance standards of the day. The Testarossa engine was an evolution of the 512 BBi’s fuel-injected 4,943cc unit but updated with all-new four-valve heads and Magneti Marelli Microplex ignition. Red-painted cam covers and ribbed intake plenums as Ferrari’s Testa Rossa sports-racing cars of the 1950s and early ’60s gave the Testarossa its “Redhead” name. In deference to the American market, the Testarossa was finished in very plush leather on the seats, the rear shelf, the headliner and visors. The trunk was adequately sized and the cockpit was very comfortable, making the Testarossa the automotive weapon of choice to cover long distances at high speeds in comfort.

The original Testarossa was re-engineered for 1992 and introduced as the 512 TR at the 1992 Los Angeles Auto Show as effectively a mechanically completely new car. Designed to be a formidable competitor to Lamborghini’s new Diablo, engine output was upped by 38 hp to 428 bhp at 6750 rpm, thanks, in part, to Bosch Motronic M2.7 engine management, Nikasil liners, a new air intake system, larger intake valves and a revised exhaust system. Top speed jumped to 195 mph while 0-60 was now just 4.8 seconds. The exhaust sound at speed alone was worth the price of admission. Visually, the new 512 TR front featured a new bumper, a new grille, twin brake ducts and new secondary light clusters. A new engine lid, color-coded rocker panels and smoked tail light clusters were topped off with a chromed Cavallino Rampante above the color-coded bumper. The interior received a more contemporary dash and center console. Attractive five-spoke wheels and larger front brakes completed the exterior updates. The highly revised chassis was much stiffer, featuring a lower-mounted engine and gearbox, gas-filled rear shocks, a lower ride height and lower profile ties on 18″ wheels, all improving both performance and handling. Both the clutch and shifting were easier on the 512 TR, thanks to a new single-plate clutch, sliding ball bearings and an improved geometry on the shifter.

1992 Ferrari 512 TR s/n 93383 has been a two-owner, meticulously maintained Texas and Southern California car its entire life. Comes with its full set of original tools, full set of original books complete down to the radio book, the warranty card and car cover. Finished in quintessential Ferrari Rosso Corsa, the car presents itself as a time-capsule example of one of Ferrari’s most recognizable and striking road cars. The paintwork is excellent and shows very nicely with no noticeable blemishes. The car’s fragile front spoiler remains intact and devoid of the damage often seen, it has the usual rock chips one would expect but is being repainted and included in the sale. The factory wheels are in very good condition and the Pirelli P Zero tires are near-new. All of the car’s glass and trim remains free of scratches or wear. Panel fit is excellent and the body is straight and true. All sticky-switches and related trim parts have been redone, of course.

The car’s interior is in equally nice condition, presenting essentially like a near-new car. The leather in the car is very clean and supple with the expected minor surface wear on the left bolster of the driver’s seat and driver’s seat pad. The automatic electrical seat belts work properly and the air conditioning blows cold. The car’s carpets, floor mats and kick-plates are all in very good condition. The engine compartment and trunk are immaculate. The front trunk carpet is very clean and shows no wear. The engine compartment is very clean and totally original. Because of its well-cared-for ownership, this nicely-preserved Testarossa is all-original and well-kept. The car has accrued 40,532 miles and represents a top-tier example of a user-friendly and iconic 12-cylinder Ferrari. We welcome any inspection. Ferrari 512 TR s/n 93383 will be delivered fully serviced and is priced right at $179,500 or best offer.
