Up for sale is my latest adult pleasure vehicle, a 1965 Ford Galaxie 500 2 door hardtop. Old cars are my hobby & obsession, I treat them as expensive adult toys. I buy 'em, enjoy 'em, get tired of 'em and move on to another old vehicle. I've enjoyed this one; but now it's time to move on.
This is the next-to top of the line Galaxie 500 model 2 door hardtop, Wimbledon White exterior color with turquoise (blue/green) cloth & vinyl cigarette smoke-free interior, white headliner, tinted glass, turquoise factory carpeting.
It's factory equipment includes: a strong 352 4 barrel, dual exhaust V8 engine, "Green Dot" 3 speed automatic transmission, power steering, c-c-COLD in dash factory air conditioning, heater, bench seat, seldom seen radio delete dashboard, full wheel covers.
The previous owner purchased this dry, west Texas car to make a NASCAR tribute/replica car out of it; but when he saw how original & complete and unmolested it was he decided not to butcher it up. I bought it because I had fond memories of riding in the back of my Mother's 1965 Ford Country Sedan station wagon over with the same colored interior.
This car gives every indication of being an original, low (54K) mileage survivor! I have no documentation to back it up; but judging by the usual lack of "wear items" (perfect carpeting, tight gear shift lever, front seat firmness, precise, short throw, still self cancelling turn signal lever, ease of door closing and window rolling up and down, lack of brake & gas pedal wear) I do believe this is a 54,000 mile car, NOT 154 or 254K.
There is no sun damage or rot on the carpeting, seat fabric, sun visors or solid, no cracks in the dashboard. This car must have have been kept in a garage or shed, out of the sun, for most/all of it's life. The windshield appears to be Factory Ford and is not cracked.
Most of the white paint is still quite good and would buff out to a smooth gloss; some surface rust is developing on the right side of the car. There is one "shadow dent" on the left quarter panel, not noticeable from most angles. There is a small amount of barely noticeable "sliding in and out" wear on the driver's seat fabric. I have the correct factory fabric to replace the inserts. I just never thought it was bad enough/worth dealing with.
The previous owner, a 1960's Ford collector and NASCAR fan, replaced the steering gear box, water pump, spark plugs & wires, all the under hood vacuum hoses, removed & cleaned out & sealed the gasoline tank and replaced the gas tank sending unit, added two additional under the hood fuel filters, installed new white wall radial tires, repaired, evacuated & recharged the freezing cold air conditioner and replace the vacuum diaphragms that make the HVAC air flow change from floor to dashboard vents to defroster.
I've replaced the following: fan clutch, 180 degree thermostat, radiator cap, carburetor, one muffler, installed an inside-the-cap Pertronix points elimination system & coil and added a coolant overflow tank & electric choke kit for the Ebay seller rebuilt Motorcraft 4100 four barrel carb.
This car starts quickly, hot or cold, pulls strong, steers quite precisely and easily, the top of the travel, firm brake pedal gives smooth, even stops with just the slightest drift (not pulling) to the right. (Seldom do front drum brakes of this era stop as straight as modern disc brakes do.) The transmission shifts up and down smoothly and quickly, with part throttle and full throttle "kick downs" happening just where they should. It's about as "fuss free" as a 52 year old car can be. Everything works, even the blue "COLD" warning light that usually dies so quickly on this year Ford. It passed brake tag inspection on the first try. I'm starting to hear a "tick-tick-tick" sound from the driver's side exhaust manifold gasket, only with the hood open and bending over the fender. It's not noticeable inside the car. This car never over heats, even with the frigid A/C on during August here in Hot & Humid New Orleans! There is very, very little of the usual compressor rumble/belt slap that this A/C system is known for.
This model year was when Ford started their "Quieter Inside Than A Rolls Royce" ad campaign. The immaculate, serene, rattle free & air leak free interior of this car upholds that claim. It is as enjoyable at 35 mph as it is at 65 mph!
I have not yet had the brakes or front end checked for worn parts. It drives so well this was always low on my priority list.
This car can be driven and enjoyed "as-is" with it's 1965 patina or made into a traffic stopping show car with a new paint job. As-is it sometimes becomes annoying; what with all the favorable comments, horn honks, waves and thumbs up this car receives from strangers! Such is the curse of driving a clean, attractive, 52 year old car.
A spare tire, jack and lug wrench is in the huge, "drive-in sized" trunk.
This car is sold as-is, with no warranty. Delivery/shipping is your responsibility. I have a clear title for this car. A deposit is required within a few days of the auction ending, full payment must be made and all forms of payment must be cleared by my bank before the car can be released to you or your shipper.
Hagerty Collector Car insurance company's online valuation guide lists this car's value (#1 being the highest, # 5 as the lowest) as $7200 for a #4 "Fair" condition car, $11,300 for a #3 "Good" condition car.
I believe that my "Buy It Now" price is quite reasonable..Because I am tired of it and bored with it I have priced it to sell! Bid early, bid often, bid high! (Ha Ha)
I have tried to be as complete and honest as I can describing the virtues & faults of this original, low mileage "Time Capsule" car. This IS a fifty two year old survivor car; not last year's Lexus.
