Back in the Spring of 1971 I’d just finished my junior year of high school and was ready for adventure.My folks were tired of the incessant teasing suffered by my three younger sisters, so there wasn’t much objection when my best friend suggested he and I take a summer-long road trip looping from Seattle to New York City and back.We built a plywood canopy for the bed of his ’48 Chevy truck, loaded-up and hit the road.Between us we had $400 to last the entire way (gas was only 30 cents a gallon).That experience became the greatest summer of our young lives!Why mention it?Because very quickly we both learned how to repair an older vehicle while far from home (by the end of those three months we’d installed a new clutch and rebuilt the engine with used parts using only vice grips and a couple screwdrivers). The knowledge gained that long-ago summer taught me, as a vintage collector, to pass by the rusty junk and only focus on rigs past owners cared about!

Take a good look at my photos of this F150 pickup.It’s easy to see the attentiveness and care taken by the long-term owner really paid off!With a casual glance, you might think this is just another ol’ truck.But, like I did, look a little closer and you’ll realize what a nice find this thing really is!Climb over, under and around this rig - I know you’ll come up smiling

Opening the hood and you’ll find the factory big-block 390 four-barrel.When cold, engage the manual choke and she starts almost immediately with just a few moments of cranking.These motors are built to last and about the only issue we ever encounter with them are exhaust manifold leaks that give a unique, throaty sound.That’s the case here.Most folks either switch out for headers or, like me, drive forever that way.

The automatic transmission shifts smoothly through all gears and we all know how great Ford rear pumpkins are in these old trucks.The data plate mounted to the driver’s door specifies a 3.0 gear ratio.Having power steering also makes for easy turns!This week we replaced the left tie rod end to help tighten up the steering.It still feels a bit sloppy to me, but again, it’s something I’ve just learned to live with.Here’s how the VIN code breaks down and info from the door data plate:

The data plate also indicates the truck was built in January, 1975 and delivered to the Seattle Sales District (#74) when new.It’s always been a Western Washington rig!We’ve found no special order information, so most likely it entered regular dealer stock inventory shortly after rolling off the Detroit assembly line.

Up in the cab you’ll see the seat’s been redone in black vinyl with no breakdown of either the springs or underlayment.The full cab-length factory-style molded carpet is new.Both sun visors are original.The headliner has been upgraded to never warping or fading ABS.For nostalgia sake, everyone likes a factory Ford Philco radio, but this nice little mid-70’s vintage AM-FM model fills the bill just fine.I don’t believe any speakers are presently mounted.

Outside I know you’ll be impressed by the classic Wimbledon White paint; it’s been resprayed to the factory color within the past year.There is no rust in the usual spots around the wheel wells and fenders.The bed’s been coated with black bedliner and has a thick rubber mat.Old paint has chipped loose under the mat in spots, but leaving it in place protects and hides.

I’ve always appreciated the look of stock 15-inch steel wheels with “dog dish” covers.There is still plenty of tread on all four tires, but they are old and should be replaced soon.

For our bidders in Washington, Oregon and California we have a great local transport company that regularly (and economically) delivers our vehicles up and down the west coast. It’s almost less expensive than airfare, food and fuel from here to Los Angeles. No worries then about a flat tire repair on the freeway either!
