Description

1930 Ford Model A Deluxe Rumble Seat Roadster

1930 Ford Model A Roadster

The Model A had big shoes to fill after the discontinuation of the legendary Model T. When it was finally introduced in December of 1927, the Model A was substantially different from the Model T. There were many improvements and important evolutionary changes such as a water-pumped cooling system, a distributor ignition, a conventional, sliding gear, 3-speed transmission, four-wheel mechanical brakes, shock absorbers and safety glass. The new 200.5 cubic inch, 40 horsepower four-cylinder engine was a perfect power source and enabled the Model A to cruise effortlessly at speeds of 55 miles per hour or more. The 103½ inch wheelbase was longer, making room for bigger, more luxurious, bodies.

The Model A was an instant success. Henry’s son, Edsel was responsible for the design of the new Ford. Many of the design cues were taken from the 1925 through 1928 Lincolns. The new Model A featured smart and up to date styling. Nearly five-million, Model As were built and sold during a four-year period-a production number that is still enviable in today’s modern, automotive marketplace.

The 1930 model year saw further cosmetic refinements. Seventeen different body styles were offered. Out of all the body styles produced, the rumble seat roadster has become the most popular with today’s collectors.

This 1930 Model A roadster has been owned for years by a collector in Southern Illinois. It is a real, all-steel, Model A roadster. It was given a thorough restoration a few years back and today remains in extremely presentable condition inside and out. The fit and finish on the body and fenders is very good. The doors and rumble lid open and close properly. The bright red paint shows extremely well with a consistent overall gloss. The deck lid does show some age while the black fenders are straight with good alignment.

On the inside, the black leatherette interior appears to have been professionally installed. It fits properly and is extremely clean. The matching convertible top shows hardly any wear. The rumble seat compartment is extremely clean and appears to have had little use since the restoration was completed.

Under the hood, the rugged Model A four-cylinder engine has been restored and well detailed. The engine compartment is extremely clean. The engine is equipped with an original Zenith carburetor, an accessory air cleaner, the original six-volt generator and the rarely seen, engine pans and shock absorbers. The wiper motor is currently inoperative. The chassis is in similar condition and shows only the expected signs of light use. The newer, white wall tires show hardly any wear.

This roadster is fitted with numerous deluxe accessories including etched wind wings, dual side-mounted spare tires with stainless steel covers, a rumble seat, cowl lights, dual tail lights, a rear mounted luggage rack, a radiator stone guard and moto-meter radiator cap.

Mechanically, it runs and drives properly. It starts easily and idles with that familiar sound that only a well-tuned Model A can produce. The engine makes plenty of power. The clutch and transmission are smooth and the car shifts easily. The prior owner used the car for various club events and local shows normally bringing home a trophy. It is reported to have always performed reliably. It has always been a properly maintained and well cared for automobile.

No old car collection is complete without a Model A and no Model A collection is complete without a roadster. This 1930 Model A rumble seat roadster is guaranteed to bring a smile to anyone who lays eyes on it and even more enjoyment for the new owner who gets to drive it.
