Very rare 1969 Ford Torino Cobra Talladega NASCAR homologation car. As with the Plymouth Super Bird, Dodge Charger Daytona, and the Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II, the Ford Talladega was designed and purpose-built to race the high oval tracks, including then-new Talladega Speedway, Daytona, etc.
Ford made only 750 Talladegas (rules required a minimum of 500 to be built to qualify for NASCAR's homologation rules), all the same except for three color choices: Royal Maroon, Wimbledon White, and Presidential Blue. Records show that number 502 was built January 31st... this car was built January 29th... it could be the very last of the 500 required homologation cars... Paint colors were divided almost exactly, approximately 250 per color.
The Talladega was and is a very rare and special car: ~6" longer than a factory Cobra (to cross the finish line first, of course!). The rules were the same throughout the cars... can't be lower than stock, no front air dams, etc. Cars were reportedly built at Ford and then shipped to the famous Holman & Moody race shop where the front fenders were lengthened, a rear bumper chopped, v'd, and re-welded to form a flat front bumper, grill moved to the leading edge of the fenders and sealed with a gasket (making an effective air dam), rockers re-rolled 1" higher and then the car lowered 1" (height was measured from rocker transition), and more. This particular Talladega came with theoptional factory hood pins (listed on Marti Report).
There are approximately 200 Talladega's known to still exist.
Two owners since new (not counting me), 64k original miles, original born-with drivetrain from air cleaner to oil pan with the exception of an early 1970 factory replacement Holley carb (correct dealer replacement),
Sold new in Boise, Idaho at Rice Ford (Rice Ford dealer decal still on rear bumper!). Originally Royal Maroon with blacked out hood and tail filler panel, the story is that the dealer could not sell the car. They decided to make a dealer drag race car out of it (very powerful engine) and in doing so painted the car yellow (where it was formerly maroon), installed exhaust headers, installed the replacement Holley carb, and changed the original 3.25 open rear center section to a 4.11 Limited Slip unit. Rear axle is still the original SCJ Drag Pack staggered shock unit, transmission is still the original HD C6 with the iron tailpiece, and the engine is the original 428 Cobra Jet with original Talladega underhood accessories like the big oil cooler, etc.
A solid runner and driver with new rear brakes, new fuel tank and sending unit. Needs new mufflers/exhuast to be a daily driver, if you want to drive a NASCAR survivor aero car on the road!
Clear title, Marti Report to verify authenticity. Minor rust at the rear lower quarters, that's about it. Floors, rockers, doors, etc. all rust-free and nice. Original interior, including carpet. Comes with a nice original un-cracked dash pad. Wheels are original born-with steel Rally's.
