Description

This McLaren Mustang is a very strong runner and a lot of fun for the money. This car is number 603 of the roughly 1800 (1806 to be exact) produced over a four year period, which makes them true rarities in the muscle car world. As is well-documented, Ford shipped completed Mustangs to ASC (American Specialty Cars) McLaren where they were substantially customized. Most notable is of course the styling with custom body moldings, spoilers, and a rigid tonneau that... stowes the convertible top. It is not often pointed out that the cars Ford shipped to ASC started out as a Fox-body Mustang coupes which McLaren then converted to a convertible by cutting off the roof. This makes the proportions of the McLaren different from the convertible Mustang of the era and resulted in a very attractive car that appears more svelte and refined than the Mustang convertible. Notable, also, is that the windshield is raked back more aggressively by some 20 degrees. The top is a more handsome cloth versus stock Mustang vinyl. A custom interior was installed at ASC, including specially designed two-tone leather front seats that sport an embroidered ASC McLaren logo. Behind the front seats is a parcel shelf and two lidded storage bins. The McLaren is powered by the venerable Ford 5.0-liter V8 engine, which many will agree is one of the best sounding Ford engines of all time. This car's engine is mated to the four-speed automatic. The car runs great and has excellent power. As previously mentioned, the engine sound is fantastic. All lights work as designed and the car stops and drives straight. The exterior of the car shows some wear in form of minor paint blemishes and the odd chip here and there--I document those areas in close-up photos. Overall, the car still presents very well as can be seen in the photographs. The cloth convertible top is in very good condition with no discernible fading. The three plastic convertible top lights could use polishing to clear them up again. The interior is in good shape, with no major tears or damage. The seats are newly reupholstered in OEM leather, the carpet is good, and the dash is excellent with no cracks. Performance cars from the Eighties have seen a recent upswing in demand among enthusiasts and this car represents a great opportunity to get into one at the ground floor.
