Aug. 4th, 1976 at 17 years of age I became the 3rd ownerat 76Kodd miles. I had to put it through one WI winter bringing the total to 8. It has been off the road since 1979 summer end. The drive-trainstill remains intactand runs well, always changed the oil and filter prior to re-start after storage. Stored on jack stands for many years. Always used premium gas.
I began restoration thru 1983 disassembling: purchasing door panels, trunk lid, chrome trim, weather striping, stripe kit, upper control arms w/ball joints, orig. shackles, shocks, radiator, etc.OEM as I could afford prior to 10 yrs. of agewhen Fordproduced no more. (see pics). Ibought abroke downstd. Mustang fastback exclusively for parts but especially for its fold down rear seat. I put new carpeting onit butthe red interior side and rear panelsstill need to be painted.Another upgrade was the bolt on windows and mechanism as opposed to the early models poor glue in windows. I attended swap meetspurchasing some itemsmostly for spare parts but especially proud of the instrument panel with factory tachometer, standard on Shelby's,not yet installed. Some other spare parts include bumpers, hood, & scoop, al lights, wiring harness, dash gauge clusters, center counsel, front belly pan, rear glass, wheel lug caps, and I'm sure I'm forgetting stuff. All that can is boxed up, and all would need an empty extended size van or bigger trailer to fit it all in.
As itsits, It's all original except for, notthinkingsome dayI maywanttoconsider it beingshow worthy, as a sheet metal worker, I fabricated and installed floor and fender panels. The front fenders, and floor panels could be redone closer to original standards though. They are not welded in. Also new Hurst shifter at the time of clutch rebuild with new disc. The original shifters were not so good. New front tires. Have the two original rear wheels. I have over 100 pictures to show as best I can all that it is with all the spare parts which I can e-mail or send aSD cardonrequest.
I haven't had this thing in my way for 43 years without being serious on getting it done and on the road again to play with, but age is catching up with me in regards to health issues I'm experiencing, so it's time to say goodbye to my second girl.
The 3 speed is fun, easier to drive, atrue gem and quicker tothe 4 speed. The White interior a blessing w/o air conditioning but all white is stained and in need of upgrade including the high back bucket seats. No power anything. Drum brakes. Parking brake needs to be freed up. Have original owners manual. Original carpeting and mustang floor mats.
Thankfully and luckily there is still an aftermarket out there, and to getwhat is still neededis obtainable to make this a real beaut, and I do believe with all the items I obtained for it over the years right down to the extra OEM nuts and bolts that it will make things more of a pleasure than aproject to put it back together for someone with the skills and tools. I'm not saying there aren't some rust issues and another issue is the front end got smacked when after a storage period when I went to start it, the clutch was stuck together and it lunged forward and hit a wall without no bumper, hood or fenders. The top under hood channel got bent on both sides and in need of repair, not a strength integrity issue though.Since, during storage I put a 2x4 betweenseat to clutch pedalat floor, keeping it disengaged.
