Description

When it comes to compiling all the right pieces to create an archetypal Deuce Hi-Boy, it doesn’t get more “old school” than this iconic 1932 Ford 5 Window Coupe Hot Rod. The two most basic elements of any Hi-Boy build are the chassis and body; in this case, those essentials come straight out of the classic playbook in the forms of a SoCal Speed Shop chassis and a genuine Henry Ford steel body. The top has three inches removed to achieve that low-down profile, while departing from today’s common practice by leaving the roof center section and cowl vent open as they came from Henry’s old assembly line. One thing is for sure: no 1932 Ford had the laser-straight bodywork and foot-deep Black Glasurit lacquer we find here on both body and frame and on the matching steel wheels, the latter wrapped in staggered-diameter narrow Firestones and finished with chromed hubcaps. Strapped in between the frame rails is another nod to old school hot rodding, a 255 CI Mercury flathead V-8 mill with all the Right Stuff: triple Stromberg downdraft carburetors on a polished-aluminum intake, finned aluminum Eddie Meyer heads, Fenton cast headers feeding dual exhaust and plenty of chrome and polished surfaces. A T-5 5-speed manual transmission and Ford 9-inch rear end tie the powertrain together. The transverse leaf suspension is a combination of drilled and chromed drop-front axle, chromed shocks and chromed split wishbones up front, with a similar arrangement at the rear; modern disc brakes were eschewed in favor of traditional Lincoln drum units. Keeping it simple but righteous is key to the Hi-Boy ethos, and the interior and trunk finishing follow that dictate with tan leather upholstery accented with pleated inserts and stylish snap-closed pockets. The drilled billet steering wheel and shifter and Classic Instruments gauges set into an engine-turned SoCal Speed Shop dash bezel are the perfect finishing touches to this perfectly nostalgic Deuce.
