1966 Ford Mustang Convertible
The year was 1966 and 289 V8 Mustangs were flying off the dealers' lots. One car that was not selling that well was Ford's 6-cylinder Mustang. The 200ci powered inline-6 pony was in dire need of a kick start, and Ford had just the plan. Enter the Sprint 200, a.k.a. the Springtime Sprint. This "limited-edition" 1966 Ford Mustang, which was introduced as part of a springtime sales promotion, consisted of an inline 6-cylinder Mustang equipped with a chrome air cleaner, special Sprint 200 air-cleaner decal, and painted side accent stripes. Ford's demographic for the Sprint 200 was women. As such, the marketing tagline, "Six and the Single Girl", was used to promote 6-cylinder Mustangs, including the special edition Sprint 200.
For consignment, the beneficiary of an older (1989) restoration where all new floors and sheet metal that was damaged was replaced, a rebuilt motor and now has put on a consigner stated mere 500 miles since that restoration. It has also been stated that since that restoration the car has not seen rain or certainly snow.
Exterior
As stated new steel where needed, then draped in red paint, which presents nicely with straight panels, and a glasslike finish. A new top was put on, and it is tan canvas. The correct chromed wire knockoff style wheels are seen on all 4 corners and wrapped in thin whites. Badging is correct, and chrome is showing in good condition.
Interior
A vinyl interior, restored "B" (automatic transmission) version, and a non-pony version (plain seats). Tuck and roll inserts are surrounded by plain bolsters and are very clean. This is in front and the back 2+2 area. Deep red wine-colored carpeting floods the floors and adds a stark contrast to the seats. The dash shows some of the deep red wine color coming through on the padded top section. The bottom goes with tan sprayed metal, and the original gauge setup is present, and we assume restored. A ribbed aluminum with 2 black vinyl border stripes makes up the finish on the console. This houses the automatic shifter, and a few hidden compartments. An original AM radio sits within the dash. Also original is the steering wheel with its 3 drilled spokes fanning out to a light tan colored wheel.
Drivetrain
An original but rebuilt 200ci inline 6-cylinder engine sits in the bay. It appears the "Sprint 200" air cleaner has been replaced, and there is no sign of the sticker either. The aftermarket air cleaner covers a 1-barrel carburetor. The engine is attached to a 3 speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission.
Undercarriage
A good restoration is a lasting one, and since 1989 this undercarriage has seen little road time, and the underside shows it. Very clean, and rust free, we can see some of the newer panels that were replaced. We can also note drum brakes on all 4 corners, and Independent front suspension, and Leaf Spring rear suspension.
Advertisements became popular reminders of the Mustang's youthful spirit, such as one featuring two mature adults sitting in a new Mustang with the words, "Youth is a wonderful thing. What a crime to waste it on children." Now is your chance to pick up a classic that can put wind in your hair, and a smile on your face...and look ma...no kids!
