Texas Classic Cars Of Dallas is happy to showcase this nice and rare 1961 Ford Galaxie Sunliner.Rarely does one see a sleek and stylish 1961 Ford Galaxie Sunliner, this is the kind of ride you wished you had in 1961. Instead of an economical inline six, under the hood reveals it has a top option 390 4V HI PERFM ENGINE V8. Mated to a ford Cruis-O-Matic transmission that shifts though gears well. The 390 High Performance had 10.6:1 compression ratio and developed 375 horsepower and 427 foot-pounds of torque with a single four-barrel carburetor. The addition of Ford’s 3 x 2 Tri-Power carburetors increased the horsepower rating to 401, an almost unheard-of figure in those days. This ’61 comes with Ford’s factory-developed row of three two-barrel carburetors, aluminum intake manifold and the elongated oval air cleaner that became so popular on a variety of Ford engines in the 1960's. On this car these carburetors were a dealer installation and installed at the dealer. They were ordered by the dealer and delivered to the dealer in the trunk of the car. Our seller has this exact car in 1961 and did the same thing, He had been looking for that same set up for many years and finally found the same setup as his old car in this 61.
And today, we have it for sale and it's ready to hit the road! After years of being virtually overlooked, these stylish full-size Fords have developed a strong following which is built around a devout appreciation for their performance and a deep respect for their innovation. If you’re a blood red fan who enjoys big time muscle, carefree open air cruising and plenty of room to stretch out, this prized drop top is your kind of car! A sporty version of Ford’s well-known Galaxie, the jet age Sunliner kicked off its long legacy with a prestigious award from the International Fashion Authority that applauded its “functional expression of classic beauty”. And in typical 60s Detroit fashion, with long panels and creases that stretch from front to back, these cars are incredibly hard to make straight if they’ve been reworked or damaged. However, on this Sunline, nothing but good care and accident free car keeps these great lines straight as an arrow.
Still the older cosmetic restoration of this car wasn’t a just quickie re-spray, a great deal of effortwent into the car to create a true classic which looks good both on the road and the show field. The car’s doors operate with precision, its hood and trunk are centered in their respective openings, and naturally, its weather stripping is fresh and pliable. On top of that straight body, a modern two stage coat of Ford Monte Carlo Red paint creates a deep and glossy finish that acrylic lacquer and enamels from 1961 just can’t touch. And thanks to our hard working detail crew, every panel is fresh out of a thorough polish which makes the car look great. It features a rare color combo Monte Carlo Red exterior and factory 2 tone white on red interior, and new carpet was installed during the restoration. Floors, trunk pan and quarters are super solid, no patch panels all original steel in very good conditio, powered convertible top with zip down back window, Fully working gauges, original AM radio, original clock, lights(low and high beam), blinkers, rear tail lights, reverse lights, wipers, original heater. All glass and stainless is in excellent condition. Paint is just as good as show quality with little wear. Comes with jack, spare tire, and original style trunk liner as you see in the pictures. Car runs and drives very well. Always turns heads and draws crowds wherever it goes.
The scalloped hood was gone for 1961, as the sheet metal was revised for a cleaner look. This time, the tail fins were almost gone; replacing them, two giant circular taillights at each rear corner, glowing like an afterburner. Ford was definitely going with the space and science-fiction theme, and with successful results; this style of Galaxie is widely regarded as a classic.
The 1961 Galaxie was a beautifully sculptured new design. So well designed, that it received a prestigious award presented by the international fashion authority, Centro per L'Alta Moda Italiana, for "functional expression of classic beauty". This new model sported an all new look with a stunning bulleted grill and rear panel design. The 1961 offered several models to include: Galaxie Club Sedan, Galaxie Town Sedan, Galaxie Club Victoria, Galaxie Town Victoria, Starliner Hardtop, Sunliner Convertible, as well as several station wagon models. These cars featured self adjusting brakes, straddle mounted pinion, galvanized body panels for rust protection and the very attractive flush mount door handles. In addition, were 13 exterior colors choices, and several interior trim choices which varied from model to model.
The engine choices consisted of the Mileage Maker Six Cylinder, Thunderbird 292 V-8, Thunderbird 352 Special with 220 horsepower, and the new Thunderbird 390 Special at 300 horsepower. In addition, Ford developed a new high performance 390 engine that was optional. This particular engine offered an optional tri-power carburetion setup which could be added to the 390 engine. The 390 Hi-Performance engine when equipped with the three carburetors was rated at an astounding 400 horsepower. Ford offered the three speed manual transmission, Ford Overdrive, Fordomatic Drive two speed automatic, and three speed automatic Cruise-O-Matic transmission. The 1961 was available with a myriad of options. Some of the more popular options were the Selectaire Conditioner, Spotlight Mirror, Continental Kit, Front or Rear Bumper Guards, Hood Ornament, Electric Windshield Washers, Deluxe Mirror with Ford Crest Insert, Power Seats, and Power Steering.
In 2012 a new heater core was installed and in 2013 the radiator was cleaned out. We have receipts for several other upgrades. Just about everything was rebuilt on this car between 2012 and 2.013
The dash and instruments remain original.
We would like to thank the Dallas Love Field Frontiers of Flight for their unique location used at many of our photo shoots.Be sure to visit this historical museum if you find yourself in the Dallas, Texas area. Texas Classic Cars of Dallas' showroom is located only minutes away.
You can see this was not a frame off restoration, but the undercarriage looks very solid.
