DESCRIPTION My 1968 Mustang fastback was a 50th birthday gift from my wife some 11 ½ years ago but it’s time to let it go and buy an RV. The reserve price is high because this is a very special car. It has 65,3xx actual miles on the odometer. Bidders are welcome to come to Colorado and see the car in person before bidding. Questions are encouraged by email or phone.
Payment will have to be made in a secure way such as cash or a wire transfer or cashier’s check. The car or title won’t be released until the payment has cleared. I have a car trailer and so delivery could be arranged to a location not too far away for a reasonable fee but delivery further away would have to be arranged by the buyer.
It’s in mostly original condition and still is show worthy. Not everyone loves Gulfstream Aqua but if you do this is a great car. It’s not perfect but it looks fine and still wins awards at shows. We are basically the 3rd owners and the 2nd owners’ family owned it from when it was 2 or 3 years old. It has always been a Colorado car and so it has very minimal rust, a bit in the engine compartment inner fenders and some surface rust under the car. The photos under the car were taken through a mirror with a wooden frame by the way.
It’s a J code 302 4 barrel with an automatic transmission. Options that it came with include power steering, center console, and a fold down rear seat. A power brake booster was added by me. I found an original dealer installed option booster to add. It runs great and the drive train is original as far as I know with one possible exception. It appears that the carb is a higher performance model that would have come on a Shelby. The 2nd owner told me this and also my mechanic confirmed it when he tweaked the settings to pass emissions. Apparently it was this way when the 2nd owners bought it around 1970 and so it’s unknown whether this was a factory substitute or a dealer warranty repair where they used a part they had in stock to replace the original carb. Apparently these carbs are rare and worth quite a bit more than the other 4 barrels but it runs great with this one.
The car was a daily driver for the first few years and so there are some rock chips in the front. The paint was touched up in several areas including the quarter panels and deck lid and one door due to minor damage, as told to me by the 2nd owner. Acrylic enamel doesn’t blend in well so if you look closely in bright light you can see several places where the paint is blended. This never stopped the car from attracting many compliments and winning car show awards.
I replaced the hood with an OEM deluxe hood that I found for sale which had been in storage for decades because I like the hood vents with turn signals. The original hood is still in good condition and comes with the car. The original hubcaps were replaced with factory correct sport wheels but the hubcaps come with it also. The engine compartment was upgraded with some chrome parts but the original air cleaner comes with it.
A burglar alarm was installed in the car by the 2nd owner but I removed it to make room for a factory type power brake booster which I put in. There are some holes in the car from those switches and from the key hole but the alarm is still installed except for the noise maker and so it looks fine. The power booster works great with the factory drum brakes but it is a bit touchy.
I installed LED lights in the taillights and also in the deluxe hood turn signals to increase the cool factor. They light sequentially from inside to outside. The installation was done without cutting any wires and drilling any holes so that mod can easily be reversed.
I had a welded dual exhaust put on a few years ago. No headers, stock manifolds were kept and the setup is not meant to be super loud, just enough to give it a sweet V8 tone. If I remember right it was a Flowmaster system.
The interior (light blue, dark blue vinyl) is original as far as I know. The center console and AM radio are all there in unmolested shape. The AT shifter knob was swapped out for a deluxe wood/metal knob with a brass running horse on it. This was done back in the ‘70s by the 2nd owner. The original chrome knob comes with it and has many fewer scratches than it would have if it had been used for 40+ years.
This is a great survivor car with no known issues. Most cars that are still this original don’t look good enough to put in a show alongside fully restored ones but this is the exception.
