| 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Fastback | | | | | | | | Odometer: 19885 | VIN: 0T05H102564 | engine: 351W V8 | Transmission: Automatic | paint: Calypso Coral | | | | | Description | | For the 1969 model year, Ford made some big changes for the Mustang. In just a few short years, the sales leading pony car had grown into a stallion. As the Detroit horsepower wars heated up, the Mustang grew to accommodate ever larger engines and more luxurious trim. All new sheet-metal gave the Mustang a long, low look, especially for the SportsRoof (aka-Fastback) body style. For 1970 the styling was tweaked even more, with pronounced rear haunches that kicked up at the tail, while the nose had a pointed center and forward-swept shark-nose profile. The result was aggressive, attractive and every bit recognizable as a Mustang. For 1969, the Mach 1 was introduced as a performance variant above and beyond the GT, a car that could keep pace with the ever-faster cars from Pontiac and Chevrolet. The Mach 1 was only available as a SportsRoof coupe, and could be had with a variety of V8 engines, from the 351-2V up through the 428 Cobra Jet. Sales of the Mach 1 were so successful that it essentially killed of the GT and remained the Mustang performance mainstay until the GT returned in 1982. Our featured 1970 example comes to us via a local client who pared back his collection. This Mach 1 is a very sound, quality older restoration finished in the original shade of Calypso Coral over black knitted vinyl. The Calypso Coral paint is one of the most desirable colors for this body, and it is accented by original matte-black hood stripes, black spoilers, black window louvers and Magnum 500 wheels. The paint is very good with deep gloss and quality finishing. Panel fit is consistent and good, showing no signs of crash damage to the body. The chrome bumpers and bright trim are straight and clean, with good quality reflections. A few superficial flaws can be found on the grille surround, albeit very minor. As part of the restoration, the floors were replaced and the work appears to be very good, now with a clean and solid undercarriage. The interior is excellent, with correct black knitted-vinyl upholstery, per the Marti Report. Black carpets, headliner and door panels are all excellent. Deluxe wood trim is also in very good order and the cabin is brightened up with a wood-rimmed steering wheel. On the road, this Mach 1 runs and drives very well. It is equipped with power steering, power front disc brakes and the FMX Select-Shift automatic transmission. Performance is excellent from the 351 engine, breathing through a Holley four barrel and the transmission shifts crisply. It sounds great thanks to tubular headers and performance mufflers. This is a great driving Mustang Mach 1 in a very desirable color combination, and restored to a usable and attractive standard, in turnkey condition. It is a very good quality car that can be driven regularly or shown with pride at a local level.
