The 1937-1940 generation “De Luxe” Series Coupes from Ford Motor Company are considered among the most distinctive pre-war vehicles in the United States.

Rightfully, they are coveted by collectors worldwide; however, 75 years after production of the series ended, original examples are almost impossible to find. Especially the ‘40 Convertibles which command a premium thanks to the many refinements made in the series’ final years including 4-wheel hydraulic brakes, hydraulic power top and sealed beam headlights.

Scores of Ford people that restore older cars today prefer the original look, combined with "modern" mechanical components. However, there's quite a number of real antique car lovers, people like us, who desire the original look and "feel" with only minimal upgrades to make roadworthy for today’s modern highways. The 1940 De Luxe “survivor” Convertible presented here is a most unique find, sure to please the most ardent admirer of an "original driver”.

Lots of original documents track VIN *5279383*, as an original 1940 De Luxe Coupe Convertible with only 4 documented owners since the mid ‘50s.

Being FULLY RECONDITIONED BOTH MECHANICALLY AND COSMETICALLY, this fantastic Ford is currently owned and treasured by a prominent dentist in Laguna Beach, CA.

A proud classic car collector and avid surfer, he often lowers the top, drives to the local surf break in Southern California and proudly displays the car for everyone’s enjoyment while paddling into the line-up.

Hence, a unique opportunity arises to obtain a coveted De Luxe Convertible, one that has lived a charmed life and is pampered beyond belief by a mature owner who actually drives the car!

Let's check out this dream find now, top to bottom, inside and out!

Exterior:

Finished in burgundy with tan convertible top and interior, this Ford is beyond unique and receives thumbs up and smiles from passersby everywhere.

Like a fine wine, this '40 is well-aged.

Many eclectic details truly make it come alive.

The chrome trimmed hood serves as the focal point of the car's ornate façade flowing through a seamless ''V8'' branded grille into a prominent pointed chin.

At the sides of that grille sculpted fenders center sealed-beam headlights above a curved chrome bumper with ”Ford” branded guard and small bumperettes.

Behind those fenders polished stainless wipers with 2-piece windshield framed between curved mirrors.

Repainted years ago to a very nice driver quality, there are a few cosmetic flaws, namely some chips, stains, scuffs and scratches.

More sparkling brightwork parallels simple door handles, small “Ford DeLuxe” scripts and traditional covered running boards.

Wornpaint and stainsbelow the gas filler shout, "Yes,I'm driven and enjoyed!”

On the trunk, a red “Ford V8” emblem, vertically oriented handle and correct, YOM CA 1940 license plate.

Rear curved bumper positions another "Ford" branded guard and two more bumperettes beneath chevron tail lamps.

Some scrapes and scratches along the lower, rear 1/4 panel can be seen in the above photo.

There are 2 dime sized bubbles seen in the paint on the right, just behind the top boot.

With a wonderful patina, thepaint's finish is still very attractive and displays a rich, buttery glow.

There really isn't much you can do to make an early '40s Ford more attractive.

The car's streamlined styling was a home run when originally introduced; and today it's a stunning example of some of the strongest elements of the highly regarded Art Deco movement.

Steel 15-inch rims wear American Classic Radials, 215/70 R15 Front W/2.25” Whitewalls, 235/70 R16 Rear W/2.5” Whitewalls

Red-detailed “FORD DELUXE” branded chrome hub caps have acquired an irreplaceable patina as well.

Automotive art, indeed!

While we’re down on one knee, let’s take a close look at the undercarriage.

After 3/4-century of use, mind you, you'll be able to fully appreciate this one!

Behind the rebuilt engine, a 3-speed transmission spins a Columbia 2-speed. Upgrades down under include dropped axle, tube shocks and ‘59 Buick 12” Brakes.

Very important: pictures of the underneath:

Everything is bone dry with a Bradley floor pan - so much easier to live with!

Let's enter the vintage cabin.

The car's warm and welcoming interior looks straight out of pre-war America.

With working heater and excellent wiring under the dash.

Lots of neat details abound.

The big, supportive seats WITH ADDED SEATBELTS for 4 passengers are upholstered in durable tan Naugahyde with matching door panels and sun visors.

Thedash is accented by stainless trim and Bakelite knobs.

Combined with the fascinating array of rectangular gauges in the instrument cluster - all direct from the art deco period.

The tactile pleasures are markedly increased by the knowledge that everything actually works; except for the clock which - like the car's styling- is timeless.

Convertible top is also in outstanding condition.

Chrome trimmed rear window unzips and unsnaps down for better ventilation.

The hydraulic feature is not currently working but the top easily folds up or down manually and interior frame is in excellent condition.

With no rips or tears, top fits snuggly with no leaks or wind noises.

Let's check out the spacious trunk!

With a full-size spare and fire extinguisher, trunk is in original and in wonderful condition with enough room to haul a day's worth of necessities.

Wood doors cover 2 storage compartments right & left.

A typical weak spot would be the trunk floor. Out of sight and deeply recessed, it is usually the first place where corrosion develops.

Things are different here! Not the tiniest rust bubble is to be found.

A picture tells a thousand words, this all original trunk is clean!

Let’s have a peek under the hood.

Engine compartment, "au naturel"...

...with the exception of a 6-volt alternator...

...and pusher fan which provides a bit of modern functionality and longevity in heavy traffic on hot summer days or parades.

The familiar 221 cubic inch flathead with 6.2 to 1 compression makes a solid 84 horsepower.

The engine was thoroughly rebuilt during the car's restoration and is in tip-top condition.

The familiar oil bath air cleaner andbrand newStromberg 2-barrel sit above correct 24-stud heads.

Surprisingly, the wiring looks fantastic and with new battery, all running and headlights working perfectly.

The little vee-eight always starts and purrs happily. There's no smoke, or major oil leaks. Ford’s mechanical longevity and simplicity is legendary, and this car keeps the legend alive!

Overall this convertible's clean and correct engine bay is a charming and 100% functional step back into a much simpler and some would say much better period in American automotive history.

Drivablilty:

What a joy to pilot this ’40 Ford!

It's a time machine, really, putting you in touch with a long-forgotten world that's only alive today in a few old children's books and vintage black-and-white movies. Time seems to slow down a bit, and you can't help but smile with giddy excitement as you pass through the countryside.

The car starts, sounds, runs, drives, handles, and stops just like you would expect from a vintage Ford “driver".

The three-on-the-tree transmission shifts a littlerough (not bad) but if you don't try to speed shift (easy does it), all the gears are easily found and the 12” brakes stop the car in a straight line without any hint of fading.

Thanks to upgraded shocks and radial tires, there's no shimmying, no rattling, no unruly behavior of any kind.

In fact, in its current condition, you could use it as a daily driver or take it cross-country.

Imagine having a beloved, vintage convertible in your driveway, a faithful friend, as spry and chipper as this one. We would like to see this treasure, this time-warp car belong to someone who appreciates its originality.

Here's a very rare opportunity to purchase one of the best ’40 Fords in existence. It does everything you would expect from a true “driver”. It looks gorgeous, and it's ready to be loved for the next 75 years. Spare parts--if needed--and classic car insurance are dirt cheap. Servicing it is a snap.

Properly restored and highly reliable: add this '40 to your family and you'll smile with delight every time you lay eyes on your prized possession!

Presently, the private owner has a clear, California Title to complete transfer here in CA. CA license and registration fees have been paid through December, 2016.

Local sales tax and a $15 DMV transfer fee applies to residents in CA
