1948 Ford Deluxe Convertible SUPERCHARGED Ford powered Carson Top Show Car
Description
The starting point for this one of a kind hot rod classic was a beautiful, restored to original, 1948 Ford Deluxe V8 Convertible. It was originally Burgundy with a Tan top.The build is well documented with a photo album showing each stage.
The chassis and suspension are the work of Kugel Komponents. The frame rails are the originals, fully boxed. A custom tubular center section was designed to withstand the torque of a supercharged engine with a convertible body, eliminating any flex or shake commonly associatedwith early convertibles. The suspension is state-of-the-art Kugel Komponents independent front and rear. The calibrated coil over shocks provide a fantastic ride, parallel to any modern performance luxury car.
The engine, built by MITECH Racing Engines, is a Ford Windsor, bored and stroked to 393 cu in. It is topped by a BDS Supercharger and dual Holley carbs, resulting in 520HP and 468 ft/lbs of torque on an engine dyno.
The transmission is a Ford C4, expertly modified to withstand the power under the hood.
The windshield chop and removable Carson Top are the work of Gene Winfield. The cowl was filled, rear fenders were sculptured to the body to eliminatethe fender welt, and the gas fill was relocatedinside the trunk. The final work and Candy Brandywine paint was applied by Hot Rods By Boyd Coddington, one of the very last cars to come out of his shop in La Habra, CA.
The all leather interior was carried out by Bills Auto Upholstery, Brea, CA.
This car is amazing to drive. The attitude of the engine is mild - easy to start and well mannered in traffic, with a light lope. The power is unlimited. The ride is always smooth, with no shake or bounce going over railroad tracks, and the car corners flat. The exhaust has a strong and tasteful note - but there are electric cutouts for showtime. This car has been driven extensively between north Orange County, CA, and San Diego, CA. Despite it's 20,000 miles since completion, it shows like a new build. It has been meticulously maintained and kept detailed from top to bottom on a regular basis, and even the full stainless steel exhaust has been removed to be re polished, keeping it show ready.
The engine was completely gone through, including new pistons, in December, 2012, and in August, 2014, the blower was overhauled and resealed by BDS.
There are many subtle modifications, each one executed to perfection. Some are listed below.
