1964 GMC Pickup Clean California truck
Description
I'm selling my 1964 GMC truck "Gus"
Gus is a good old truck with an interesting story.
This is as close as I remember it....
He was sold new in Sacramento in 1964, He comes with the original plate frame and key chain from the dealership...
After living life on the farm for many years,
Gus headed to a small airport in Oregon where he helped out with many truck related tasks for many more years.
I bought Gus from a pilot that I believe flew into and out of that airport who brought him back home.
After buying the truck, I gave it a thorough going over.
We replaced all of the brake cylinders and checked the brakes out... Stopping is important.
Then the steering box was found to be wearing and had a bunch of play in it, so it was replaced with a rebuilt one from LMC truck.
Steering is now smooth and tight (For a 60's truck)
Gus has the big 305 V6 engine that makes piles of torque and a really nice sound.
Speed...
Gus topped out at about 55 comfortably on the freeway without revving the hell out of it.
As you all know, that's roadkill in the bay area.
We swapped the original "Granny plus 3" transmission with a fresh rebuilt 1995 T5 transmission.
The adapter was provided by Bendtsen's Speed Gems. (transmissionadapters.com)
A new clutch was required at this time too to complete the swap.
Everything bolted in without too much fuss thankfully and after much adjustment, Gus had a 5 speed.
He could now cruise at 65 and see the world.
After the trans swap, He was my daily driver for a month to make sure everything was solid and dependable.
I think I made one slight linkage adjustment and it was happy.
Then Gus came off the road to get the treatment I bought him for.
We stripped the frame down to metal, cleaned and painted it, installed an under-bed tire mount.
We tore the rotten wood out of the bed and took the bed completely apart.
The bed wood was replaced with pressure treated white oak that I sanded to 600 grit, then coated it with a special Epoxy.
This epoxy is UV blocking and tough. It's designed for outdoor kitchen wood counter-tops.
The interior was the most in need of help.
I took everything out, sent the seat to my upholstery guy in Milpitas, CA and started wire wheeling the whole interior.
After removing 50+ years of grime, the floor was sealed with oil based rustoleum, the walls are "Dark Machine Grey" Sprayed Rustoleum.
There is a nice carpet on the floor and the seat so SO comfy now!
I cleaned up the gun rack and put it back in.... why not right?
We took the body down to metal, straightened, and worked it back into shape.
While Gus was never rusty, he took his share of bumps and bruises over his long career.
Gus was painted with:
Etching epoxy primer under and over any filler to completely seal it.
Medium build urethane primer to perfect the base.
2 generous coats of "Dark red" paint from Southern Polyurethanes.
This is the closest red I found to "GMC Service Red"
On top there are 2 coats of euroclear clear coat.
After the required amount of buffing and polishing, I bought some cool looking baby moon rims and new tires for Gus so he would roll in style.
I had the original carb professionally rebuilt, but it eventually started leaking gas out of anywhere they touched.
So I replaced the original carb with a brand new Holley and made an adapter plate.
What a difference! Gus could breathe.
For a few years, Gus made Xmas appearances in Willow Glen and Los Gatos with a wreath on the front and a Christmas tree in the bed.
I've had a lot of good memories with Gus, but it's time for him to move on.
