This is a very rare 3 owner 1980 Scout Terra Diesel. It is rare to find one and even rarer to find one with 100 percent original paint, there is no Bondo whatsoever in this truck, there has been ZERO bodywork ever done to truck.
It is the mostdesirableyear for a diesel scout and the last year that they were made. It has the mostdesirable transfer case and axle assemblies you could get in a Turbo Diesel Scout.
These and the engine are original to the truck. This truck could be driven daily or restored to your liking very easily, I choose to sell it this way as I prefer original vehicles or to start on one where I know what I am getting, and I think that most collectors do as well, like a barn find. This is that truck.

I bought this Scout from world famous Scout experts The Scout Connection in Iowa, and had itshipped to Seattle where is was garage kept and driven fairly often from when I bought it in 2004 until 2013. When I bought it from The Scout Connection I paid a small fortune for it (and deservedly so) and it had about 108,000 miles on it if I remember correctly. I was told that the Scout was owned by a professor and had gone from Kansas to Guatemala and back for real. It was very original and very highly detailed at the time. I was also told that the original owner was in Southern California. I have hadother Scouts, I looked for this one for several years before I bought it. It was that nice and original. My circumstances and the room I have for my collection changed, and I no longer had inside parking for the Scout in a rainy climate. In 2013 I lent it long term to one of my brothers a famous customchopper builder in Tucson, AZ, the infamous King Danny Big Love. He used thetruck to haul bikes between Tucson and Los Angeles all the wayup to San Francisco and all points in between. He used it daily and other drivers contributed the dents you see on the truck now. He counted on it to move him across deserts, with custom bikes in the back without fail. Circumstances changed, I went to Tucson, and drove the truck back up to Seattle in May of 2016, it was in the condition you see here when I went South to pick it up, and since then it has been used locally in the summer and otherwise stored inside on a battery tender in myheated facility.
The truck has never been disassembled, everything you see (aside from slight performance upgrades from 2nd owner) is as it came from IH in 1980. The interior is original.
The interior is a victim of the AZ sun, It needs work or you can run as is with a seat cover, the dash pad is great. The wiper knobfalls off however, some things stickand or need lube. The door panels are a bit loose on the bottom. The interior is plain worn. The heater fan switch has been replaced with a toggle by 2nd owner. The original stickers are in the glove box, although the line setting ticket is smeared and illegible now. Everything in the interior is what was delivered new, the interior has never been apart.
The engine lights right up and it has an aftermarket higher torque starter, and a fresh battery. The 2nd ownerfabricated a cold air intake to air cleaner. I drove it back from Tucson, (even didsome trails on the way, the lead photo is on a trail on that trip) I can honestly say that the drivetrain is amazing it just goes and goes. Cold it starts up veryquickly, after its warm the engine starts on a slight bump, it does not even do a full revolution. Its a very, very solidpower plant. It leaks and seeps oil from numerous locations, however not enough to keep it off the road but enough to notice the drips.
The body work is original but needs the forward quarter panel skins patched, and the drivers rocker panel where the weatherstripping touches needs two smaller patches. Other wise the truck has very, verylittle rust. The winshield has ZERO rust in the bottom corners, this is very rare. There is NOT the usual Scout rust onthis truck. The floors are great, the bed is surface rusted. The frame is very solid. The hubcaps I just installed they are OEM brand new, ZERO miles on them.
The truck drives straight and tracks true, it is rather agricultural in driving feel, and maybe that's why I love it so much, it really is a remarkable example. This is a very special truck.
This truck would be an EXCELLENT candidate for a restoration, either light or full. I would prefer that to be the future forthis Scout. However, with some small mechanical fixes I would nothesitate to drive across country or use daily.
Understand I drove it from Tucson to Seattle as you see it, however, the truck has the following issues:mechanically: the power steering pump is bad, the steering wheeljitterswhen turning at idle, the brake booster system likewise loses vacuum at idle, rev it up its fine, at idle pumping brake it loses "power assist" and brake pedal as well, the engine could use headre-torqued as it is seeping oil a bit in rear, this si a regularmaintenanceprocedure, no loss of coolant or intermix or over-heating observed at all, engine runs rock solid and smooth. I was told when I bought it that the head gasket was replaced at 80,000 miles. The radiator seeps a bit at hose. The emergency brake needs adjustment. Many things need lube, it was in the desert for years. Cosmetically there are dents and dings, there is very very very little rust. 1980 Scouts were galvanized inside and out and this was the only year that they were. door window weatherstripping on the hardtop is missing, the windshield is cracked, twice. The fuel tank is missing a nut to hold it up. The latches all need lube. Tailgate latch needs new spring.
