Incredibly rare condition in that this numbers matching E-type was maintained by its original owner for thirty-eight years until my purchase eleven years ago in 2006. The car was purchased new and lovingly cared for by Charles L. Pomernacki Jr., an engineer at Lawrence Livermore Laboratories. Charles and I had lunch and he shared that he purchased the car after returning from working overseas as a petroleum engineer. He was meticulous about maintenance and his handwritten notes for each service are visible on each of the factory service intervals maintenance vouchers.
Since 1968 when Charles accepted a job at Lawrence Livermore Laboratories, this E-type has lived within a 25 mile radius of San Francisco. As a result of the California climate and always being garaged, the car is extremely rust-free. The original chrome is still beautiful and free of pitting. I believe this is in most part due to the indoor garage space where the car was parked was next to a personal woodworking studio with plenty of sawdust to act as a desiccant for any moisture.
The original headliner and interior trim are in excellent condition and because of this, upon entering the car you’re left with the wonderful feeling of a vintage sports car that has been continuously cared for, for 50+ years, and still retains factory authenticity. Only the seats and center console were correctly re-trimmed, using the proper type leather grain/texture for Jaguar and moquette seat backing, by an upholsterer of Pebble Beach show winning automobiles. I kept the original floor mats and leather seat covers.
The exterior is one of the absolute best E-type coupe colors, Carmen Red, and it is no surprise the XKE Data website’s logo is a Carmen Red fixed head coupe. The shade of Carmen Red on this coupe is the closest I have ever seen to the original, and matches the original paint on the door jams and underside of the bonnet perfectly. Carmen Red was much warmer in value tone than Signal Red, and it has been my experience that so many red E-types have been painted a more common, modern blue-ish red, which to me is not fitting of the 1960’s retro styling of the coupes.
All of the factory body seams are flawless, including the original spot welds down the underside of the boot and the original tabs around the rear license plate area. The car was optioned with the Amco front and rear protector bumper bars and this is likely what kept the bonnet and rear boot in great condition. The undersides of the doors are like new with close to perfect original paint and no corrosion. The factory grease pencil marking of the car number, from when the car was assembled at the factory, is intact and visible on the passenger side. All of the glass, including the windshield and front headlight glass, is original to the car and bears the original Triplex stamp.
All the original factory keys, California black license plates, books and documentation such as the original bill of sale have been kept with the car (see photo). The original jack and toolkit are all with the car. Even the original Dunlop nylon thin white walled tire is still mounted to the spare. It is noted on the original bill of sale that this car was optioned with white-walls when new. Also I should note, the engraving on the back of steering wheel horn button states the production was August of 1966.
Mechanically, the car drives impeccably. The cylinder head was rebuilt within the last 4,000 miles and is extremely quiet without the common ticking I hear on so many Jaguar valve-trains. Being a late 1966 production car, the cylinder head was painted gray by the factory instead of gold. The oil pressure gauge at idle reads 50 lbs. The cooling system was set up to look completely stock cosmetically, however the radiator is a custom Ron Davis Racing aluminum radiator. Ron Davis Racing in Texas is famous for making the highest quality handcrafted radiators. Their modern 16-blade fan fits, and conceals, perfectly inside the original factory shroud.
The brake wheel cylinders were also recently replaced, as well as the spring and rubber mounts for the transmission. The instrument gauges have been recalibrated and restored by West Valley Electronics in Reseda, CA. The heater box was also restored at this time. Due to this car only having been driven by two people, the original owner and myself, the gearbox has that wonderful, perfectly worn-in feel. The bonnet hinges were also recently refinished in the proper cadmium plating, with new springs. I have two sets of wheels and the car will be sold with the original chrome wires and correct sized Vredestein tires. In the photos, I have modern Yokohama Avid tires mounted.
